Geneva council approves South Adams resource officer pact

    Geneva Marshall Rob Johnson presented an update on the School Resource Officer agreement to the town council at its meeting Tuesday night.
    Because the grant that initially funded the wages of South Adams School Resource Officer Scott Dailey has expired, the town and the school have been working together to figure out a way to continue Dailey's presence in the school. Johnson presented the official agreement, a one-year contract in which the town and school agree to work together to pay Dailey's wages as school resource officer.

Communications towers are likely to be replaced

    Sheriff Shane Rekeweg talked to the county at their weekly meeting on Monday about replacing the communications towers in Monroe and Decatur.
    He explained that both are overloaded with equipment and he advised building a new one that will be able to hold all of the equipment needed. The commissioners were open to the idea, and bids will be accepted for the project next week.

Rain just keeps on coming

    The rain just keeps on coming ... and the river is beginning to rise.
    The Decatur weather station recorded .56 of an inch of rain on Monday, giving the city some 2.8 inches of rain in the past nine days — with more expected today.
    A total of 1.8 inches of rain has fallen here in the last three days, and the St. Marys River is beginning to edge up, reaching 11.8 feet this morning. That's far short of its flood stage, of course, but further rain could push it higher.

Crash in Jay County ends chase; teen driver charged

    More information was released today by the Decatur Police Department concerning the arrest of a Portland teenager early Monday morning.
    A police report said that at approximately 3:12 a.m., city officers attempted to make a traffic stop on a person wanted for questioning in connection with a stolen vehicle report.

Kicking Out Cancer team slots filling up fast

On Saturday, August 10 at the diamonds of Hanna Nutman Park, the fourth annual "Kicking Out Cancer" co-ed kickball tournament sponsored by the United Steelworkers 15173 will begin at 8 a.m.

Milton H. Brown

July 1, 2013

    Milton H. Brown, 74, of Decatur, passed away at his residence on Sunday, June 30, 2013.
    Milton was born on January 14, 1939, in Indianapolis to the late Arthur A. and Mildred R. (Miller) Brown.
    On December 29, 1990, he married Linda K. Litchfield; she survives in Decatur.
    Milton worked as an electronic repair man and was the owner/operator of L & M Communications. He was a member of the Eagles R/C Club, where he served as past president.

Kenneth R. Curtis

    Kenneth R. Curtis, 53, of rural Bryant, died Thursday at his residence.
    Among survivors are his wife, Tonya E. (Hirschy) Curtis of Bryant; son, Chris R. (Laura) Curtis of Portland.; daughter, Jackie P. Curtis of Bryant; and sister, Debbie Gibson of Berne.
    Visitation is 2-8 p.m.  today and 2-3 p.m. Tuesday at Downing & Glancy Funeral Home, Geneva. Funeral Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in West Lawn Cemetery in Geneva.

Todd K. Hockemeyer

    Todd K. Hockemeyer, 51, of Hoagland, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2013, at St. Joseph Hospital in Fort Wayne following an apparent heart attack at his residence.
    Todd was born Monday, May 28, 1962, in Decatur, to the late Kenneth W. Hockemeyer, who passed away October 1, 2003, and Marjorie (Bultemeier) Price.
    He married Carla Spieth on September 14, 1985, in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in New Haven; she survives in Hoagland.

Donald F. Snow

    Donald Fredrick Snow, 84, of Geneva, died Sunday at Chalet Village Health & Rehabilitation in Berne.
    Among survivors are his wife, Margaret (Cook) Snow of Geneva and two daughters, Lisa (Ed) Neuenschwander of Fort Wayne and Julie Snow of Geneva..
    Visitation will be from 6-9:30 p.m. Tuesday at Downing & Glancy Funeral Home in Geneva and 10-11 a.m. Wednesday at Calvary Bible Church in Berne. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will follow in West Lawn Cemetery in Geneva.

Fireworks are a ‘go’ for Thursday

    The green light is flashing for Decatur's annual Fourth of July fireworks display, the 21st year the event will be held here.
    The event on Thursday, July 4, will get under way at 6 p.m. with DJ Rick Teboe providing music. At 8:15, color guards from Decatur and Berne American Legion posts and the Geneva VFW will march in, followed by a welcome given by Mayor John Schultz.
    Chief organizer Adam Equia said the featured speaker will be Command Ssgt. Major Fritz Bultemeyer.
