Chief: Fire department building new station

    The new fire station in Monroe is "coming along well," according to Monroe Fire Department Chief Russell Cook.
    Cook told the Monroe Town Council last week that the new station, located on the northwest side of Monroe near the water tower, is expected to be completed on schedule, if not a little before. Cook declined to give a date, but said work is progressing quickly.

County to get extra $1.4M in highway funds

    State Sen. Travis Holdman, R-Markle, is a statement released this week, has announced that Adams County will see an increase of more than $1.4 million in transportation funding for 2014 and 2015.
    Holdman said the General Assembly's biennial state budget, approved during this year's session, increased transportation funding statewide by $210 million during each of the two years covered. Adams County is slated to receive $5,730,199 in highway funds during that time, the state lawmaker said, an increase of $1,448,000.

Ellen L. Butcher

    Ellen L. Butcher, 81, of Decatur, passed away Saturday, August 3, 2013.
    Ellen was born November 8, 1931, to the late Charles L. and Dorothy D. (Caves) Herman in Adams County.
    On February 25, 1951 she married Robert L. Butcher; he passed away January 25, 2006.
    Ellen was a lifelong resident of Adams County. She was a homemaker who retired in 1991 from C.T.S. Corporation in Berne, and was a member of the Decatur Church of God.

Alice G. Fullenkamp

August 5, 2013

    Alice G. Fullenkamp, 94, of Decatur, died Friday, August 2, 2013 at Adams Memorial Hospital.
    Alice was born November 29, 1918, in Adams County to the late Fred E. and Amelia R. (Kohne) Baker.
    On May 5, 1945, she married Ernest B. Fullenkamp; he preceded her in death on July 4, 1975.

Virginia J. Steiner

August 5, 2013

    Virginia Jane (Sprunger ) Steiner, 92, of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and formerly of Vermilion and Findlay, Ohio, and Decatur, died Thursday in Carlisle following a period of declining health.
    Among survivors are her husband, Matthew Bliss Steiner;and  three sons, Stanley (Joyce) Steiner of Killeen, Texas, Merrill (Carol) Steiner of Newtown Square, Penn., and Wesley (Marilyn) Steiner of Albuquerque, N.M.

Blythe wins Decatur Golf Championship

    Over the weekend, Cross Creek Golf Club hosted the 2013 City of Decatur Golf Championship crowning Keith Blythe as the winner after two rounds.
    Blythe claimed the victory recording a round of 71 on Saturday and a 74 on Sunday.
    “I played better towards the end of Sunday’s round to hang in there for the tournament win,” remarked Keith after the event.
    Nate Kortenber earned second place posting rounds of 73 and 74 over the two days played in the men’s division.

Gearing up for Kekionga Fest

    The third annual Kekionga Community Garage Sale will be held Decatur on Friday and Saturday, August 16-17.
    Sponsored by the Daily Democrat, the sale started as part of the city's 175th Anniversary Celebration and has continued as a part of the annual Kekionga Festival.
    Those interested in taking part in a special garage sale promotion by the Decatur Daily Democrat should contact the newspaper, 724-2121, for more information.

Internet, email service restored

August 2, 2013

    Internet and email service was restored to the Daily Democrat around noon on Friday.
    Both services have been on only infrequently since Thursday afternoon.
    Centurylink officials told the newspaper Friday morning that a widespread outage which affected numerous states on Thursday had been corrected around 6 p.m., but another outage sprung up.
 

Storybook to 'open' August 13

    Groundbreaking ceremonies for Storybook Park, a new green space and park area being created by the Adams Public Library System, will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 13, at the corner of Jefferson and 3rd streets in Decatur. The public is invited to attend the event.
    APLS Director Kelly Ehinger said the fundraising campaign for the park has reached its first goal for groundbreaking of more than $50,000, or 50 percent of the total cost of the project.

Harriet L. Habegger

    Harriet L. Habegger, 77, of Berne, passed away Wednesday morning, July 31, 2013 at Swiss Village after a short illness.
    Harriet was born to the late Oren A. and Nina B. (Hossler) Nicloy on June 20, 1936 in Fort Wayne.
    She married Merlin W. Habegger on April 5, 1969.
