HARTFORD CITY—South Adams began their young volleyball season on Monday night when they traveled to Blackford to meet up with the Bruins.
Despite a reserve win, the varsity was a three-set victim to Blackford 25-22, 25-19, 25-14.
"It was a tough loss because we did not come out as strong as I would have liked to see," admitted SA coach Amie Sprunger. "We are holding our heads up high and looking forward to another match this week against Canterbury on Thursday."
Norbert P. Selking, 77, of McHenry, Ill. formerly Hebron, Ill., passed away friday, August 16, 2013, at Heritage Woods in McHenry.
Norbert was born in Decatur on November 15, 1935, a son of the late August and Frieda (Gallmeyer) Selking.
He was a graduate of Monmouth High School and attended Valparaiso University. He received the Jaycee Distinguished Service Award in Decatur.
St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery is getting some upgrades these days.
The cemetery board recently approved board members Greg Brite and Phil Wolpert and Decatur American Legion member Bruce Reidenbach to go through the entire cemetery and update the veterans' grave markers.
Members of the Peace Monument restoration committee are asking all Adams County military veterans to turn out for next Saturday's rededication ceremony.
"We especially hope all World War II veterans in the county can attend, and we urge all veterans to be on hand," Dave Meyer, a member of the committee, said on Friday. Meyer said special seating will be arranged for the veterans.
The ceremony is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. next Saturday at the monument site,
The Historic Downtown Decatur Wagon Tours will be held Thursday, August 20, from 4 p.m. – 8 p. m, in conjunction with the Kekionga Taste of Decatur event.
The horse-drawn tours will begin and end at Riverside Center and feature local historian Max Miller with a history of the many sites of interest in the downtown area
Tickets will be available during the event at $5 each.
Bellmont soccer hosted a total of nine teams on Saturday for their annual Soccer Jamboree including squads from Leo, New Haven, South Adams, and Woodlan.
"It was a beautiful Saturday morning for the event," BHS girls coach Steve Lee noted afterwards. "We were pleased with athletic department staff as it was very organized and it helped make this a great start for soccer season."
Tonight's contest at Worthman Stadium between the Jay County Patriots and the Bellmont Braves will be webcasted by the DDD. The football scrimmage will begin at approximately 7 p.m. and the broadcast will begin coverage around 6:40 p.m.

Sara Lucile Collier, 99, of Decatur, died Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at Swiss Village Nursing Center.
Sara was born January 28, 1914, in Cambridge, Neb., to the late Felton B. and Lucile E. (Perry) Moore.
On June 12, 1943, she married C. Doyle Collier; he preceded her in death on September 30, 1998.
North Adams Community Schools has prepared an operating budget for 2014 in the amount of approximately $20 million, the bulk of which will be the subject of a public hearing held by the Adams County Council on August 30.
The council must approve the portion of the school district's budget that is funded from state coffers, said Larry Carty, business manager for the school district.
Decatur's River Greenway Trail will be closed from 9-10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 14, for the annual Adams Memorial Hospital Catch Your Breath 8K and 5K Run/Walk and a 1-mile fun run.
The races will begin at the trail head of the River Greenway by Evergreen Assisted Living Apartments and continue along the trail, an announcement said. The 5K participants will complete an out and back 3.1-mile run while the 8K participants will travel a total of 4.96 miles.
