Squaws take 4th at NHC; Carroll wins

    FORT WAYNE—Bellmont girls cross country coach Carl Risch will freely admit to anyone who wants to listen that he believes Bailey Beery, a sophomore on his team this year, is one of the top "5-10 runners in the state."
    Beery solidly backed up that statement Saturday in the annual Northeast Hoosier Conference cross country meet winning the girls race by sloshing her way to an 18:30.4 finish in an event mired by driving rain and mud.

Jets use third quarter surge to down So. Wells, 42-26

    PONETO — In a game that had six touchdown plays covering 10 yards or more, it was a fourth down run up the middle by Adams Central's Kyle Baker that put the Jets in control in a 42-26 win over Southern Wells Friday night.
    On fourth down and four yards to go at the Raiders' 44-yard line and the Jets' punter Alex Byerly in formation, Baker took a direct snap and barreled straight ahead, knocking over four Southern Wells defenders on a 29-yard spurt that ended on the 15-yard line.

Erma L. Blair

    Erma Lucille "Lucy" Blair, 82, passed away at 2:38 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
    Lucy was born on April 20, 1931, in Wells County to Arnold and Gladys (Haughton) Ivins. She married Carl L. Blair on May 12, 1956, in Fountain City. He preceded her in death on July 31, 1993.

Harold B. Miller

    Harold B. Miller, 83, former mayor of Decatur, died at Woodcrest Nursing Center on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013.
    Harold was born on Dec. 30, 1929, in Jay County to the late Perry S. and Fern (Huey) Miller. He married Mary Lou Hofstetter on Oct. 28, 1950. She preceded him in death on Oct. 1, 1995. On March 7, 1998, he married Nancy Pommer, and she survives.

Peggy Robinette

    Peggy Robinette, 73, Berne, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
    She was born in Portland to Evelyn and Ruby (Zeigler) Updike.
    Survivors are her husband, Jack F. Robinette; and a son, Charles Robinette, of Decatur.
    Visitation will be before the service.
    Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the Baird-Freeman Funeral Home. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Pennville.

Home detention for ex-city employee

    Former Decatur Storm Water Management Director Joan A. Eichhorn, 57, Decatur, pleaded guilty Thursday afternoon to a plea agreement negotiated by her attorney, Stanley L. Campbell, Fort Wayne, and Adams County Prosecuting Attorney Christopher E. Harvey.

Monroe eyes costly sewer line upgrade

    Monroe Town Council on Thursday evening heard a presentation from a representative of Gorman-Rupp Pumps on upgrades needed to fix sanitary sewage lines that run from Monroe to Berne’s wastewater treatment plant. The cost for the project has been estimated at $23,000.
    Council President Al Lehman used an analogy to describe the predicament the town is in, saying, “We can spend $20,000 to fix an old car, or $20,000 to get a new one. That is the position we are in.”

Former Mayor Harold Miller recalled fondly

    “It’s a sad day for Decatur,” said mayor John Schultz when informed of the passing of former Decatur mayor Harold Miller, 83, who died Tuesday at Woodcrest Retirement Community.
    Schultz said he feels those who step forward to serve the community are greatly unappreciated, and Miller was no exception.

Lady Jets top Starfires in three, nab ACAC crown at 7-0

    MONROE — For the second consecutive season, Adams Central has cleared the field during the ACAC schedule and earned the conference crown thanks to a three-set sweep of the South Adams Starfires at home on Senior Night 25-19, 25-16, 25-18.
    "I think we were more excited about Senior Night and winning it for the girls but going 7-0 in the conference is something we are very excited about," smiled Ashley Beard, the AC coach.
