County jobless rate shoots up – Still one of lowest in the area

    Despite a 1.1 percent jump in its jobless rate from December of 2012 to January of this year, Adams County continues to sport one of the lowest unemployment levels in northern Indiana.
    According to figures released Monday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, only Jay and Wells counties featured a lower jobless rate during January than did Adams among counties in the northern half of the state.

Spring almost here...but doesn’t feel like it

    Spring officially arrives in Indiana on Wednesday, but winter continues to keep an icy, cold grip on the state.
    Big winds this morning made it feel like the middle of winter. The National Weather Service in Fort Wayne had a reading of 25 degrees at 7 a.m. today, but a west wind at 25 mph gusting up to 31 mph was producing a wind-chill reading of 9 degrees!

Freezing rain advisory stays

      The Decatur area remained under a freezing rain advisory early this afternoon. The National Weather Service said a mixed bag of precipitation would persist into early afternoon across much of northern Indiana.
    The Indiana Department of Transportation reported around 12:30 p.m. that driving conditions remain difficult on Interstate 69 between US 224 (six miles south of Fort Wayne) north to DeKalb County Road 11-A (two miles south of Auburn).
    Drivers were urged to use caution.

    Don H. Arnold, 88, Goshen, died Saturday.
    Among survivors are wife, Nancy Arnold of Goshen, and two brothers, including Homer (Edith) Arnold of Berne.
    Visitation will be 2-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday t Owen Family Funeral Home, 1001 S. Huntington St., Syracuse. Funeral services will be there at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will follow in Milford Cemetery.
 

Freezing rain ices city, area

March 18, 2013

    Freezing rain which hit the Decatur area around 5 a.m. today closed schools and caused some slideoffs, including a traffic accident which closed US 27 north of Berne for nearly two hours.    
    The freezing rain left a hard coat of ice over city streets and county roads, but the hazardous driving wasn't expected to last too long with a high reading of 44 degrees expected in Decatur today.

AC honors teacher who got IU honor

    Adams Central teacher Katie Isch was recognized by the school board this week after being named a recipient of the Armstrong Teacher Educator Award for 2013-14 by Indiana University (IU).
    The award was developed in 1997 to honor exemplary teachers throughout Indiana interested in working with teacher education students, faculty, and staff at IU, according to a release issued by the university.

Lawmakers say key decisions ahead

    With the 2013 session of the Indiana General Assembly having passed its midway point late last week, a pair of state lawmakers on Saturday said final decisions on school-related issues, the state’s biennial budget and other pending legislation will come slowly into focus during the next six weeks.

Squaws dominate for indoor state track title

March 18, 2013

    MARION — With the state championship on the line, Bellmont junior Holly Hankenson made up most of the 20 meters she needed on the first lap, then passed the Oak Hill 1600 meter relay anchor midway through the second lap and held her off with a sizzling 59.4 as the Squaws won the event and took the 2013 Small Division indoor state track crown Saturday at Indiana Wesleyan University.
