Dennis McBarnes was the clear winner this week for Pigskin Picks missing just the Houston/St. Louis game and was one off of the tie-breaker point total of 48 points. With three contestants tying at -1 (45) points and only two prize spots available, the second tie-breaker was a blind draw to determine who would win second and third place. Greg Coyne was picked for second place and Kenny Grim earned third place with the next draw. Joyce Schultz was the unlucky entrant left just out of the prizes. :(
Decatur’s annual Callithumpian Festival is less than two weeks away, with the popular parade planned for its traditional 6:57 p.m. start on Monday, Oct. 28 to highlight the fest.
Many events are planned prior to parade night, and some have been taking place throughout the month.
The Adams Central Squadron of Sound performed its award-winning show "Celebrating Innovation" for the community Saturday in Monroe. The goal of the show was to fill the stands with friends, relatives, band alumni, teachers, neighbors and community members who may never get to attend a competition according to band supporters. Approximately 30 members of the Decatur Chamber of Commerce and their guests received a lesson in memory recall techniques Monday during the chamber's monthly networking luncheon at Woodcrest retirement community.
Drew Martin, a spokesperson for Direct Development Training based in Kentucky, spoke on the importance of having a good memory in business and the affects memory can have on a business's clientele.
IHSAA RELEASE— A day after the football pairings were announced, the Indiana High School Athletic Association released the match-ups for girls volleyball amongst 402 entrants around the state.
The tournament will begin on Tuesday, October 22 and run through Saturday at 64 different sites and four classes.
KINGSLAND— The Squaws wrangled in their fourth sectional title in Bellmont's school history on Saturday when they defeated South Side 1-0 at Norwell.
The lone score came 20 minutes into the game off a direct kick near the right corner from Bailey Beery. Ryann Velez made a run directly in front of the goalie and headed the ball forward and it was rainbowed over the goalie's outstretched hands. While still up for grabs, Ashley Hamrick redirected the ball into the back of the net with her head as well.
More than a dozen volunteers showed up around dawn Saturday to help Decatur resident George Craig enhance the curb appeal of his aging home. The echoing motivation was simple; those who gathered at the intersection of 2nd and Jackson streets on Saturday simply wanted to lend a helping hand.

At a recent reunion held by the Decatur High School Class of 1963, funds were raised during a silent auction to contribute a tree, a brick and a general contribution to the Storybook Park in downtown Decatur.
The Bellmont boys and girls soccer teams each claimed sectional tournament wins over the weekend and will begin regional play later this week. The Squaws will square off against DeKalb in the East Noble regional on Wednesday , while the boys play Canterbury in the Carroll regional opener on Thursday.
Fern M. (Hisey) Daniel, 95, Berne, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at Swiss Village Retirement Community.
Among survivors are a son, Noel (Julia) Daniel of Indianapolis; and daughter, Brenda (Jerry) Price of Celina, Ohio.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m.- 1 p.m. on Tuesday at Swiss Village Retirement Center.
Funeral services will follow, also at the retirement center.
Burial will be at West Lawn Cemetery, Geneva.
