Decatur firefighters are on scene at a house fire on Piqua Rd.

    A house fire on Piqua Rd., just north of Cornerstone Church, has the Decatur Fire Department busy this afternoon as they brought the blaze under control. Units from Preble were called in to assist with the blaze and paramedics were on hand as well.
    It was initially thought the homeowner was trapped inside, but firefighters quickly learned this was not the case. The house was empty at the time of the fire. Crews were still on scene at 12:30 p.m. Monday.

Letter from prison goes on posters to be put in schools

    Cody’s Letter Poster portrays a young man from Decatur reaching out from behind prison bars to warn young people about the dangers of illegal drugs.
    The posters are being distributed to all three Adams County High Schools and one middle school. 

Jobless rate dips a bit

    Adams County's unemployment rate for March stood at 8.1 percent, down fourth-tenths of a percent from one month earlier, according to figures released Friday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.
    The county began 2013 with an 8.8 percent jobless rate in January, the highest since a 9.2 percent reading in January of 2011. One year ago the county's unemployment rate stood at 8.0 percent.

Chamber luncheon focuses on health care

    The federal Affordable Care Act was the main topic of discussion on Friday at Adams Central School.    
    The Chambers of Commerce of Decatur and Berne hosted a forum in which those attending could pose questions about the health care plan to State Rep. Matt Lehman, R-Berne, and Mike Ripley, vice president of health care policy for the Indiana Chamber of Commerce.
    Wes Kuntzman and Sheree Barkley, directors of the Decatur and Berne chambers, respectively, hosted the event.

Russell L. Plumley

April 22, 2013

    Russell L. Plumley, 77, of Monroeville, Ind., passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2013, at his residence.
    He was born Monday, June 17, 1935, in Van Wert, Ohio, to the late Dewey and Esther (Johnson) Plumley.
    Russell married Dorcas E. Sautbine on September 4, 1954; she passed away on October 4, 2006.

Robert L. Litwiller

    Robert L. Litwiller, 78, Berne, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2013, at his home.
    Among survivors are his wife, Marilyn; two sons, Phil (Sonnie) Litwiller of Berne and Scott (Sheri) Litwiller of Berne; two daughters, Becky (Kent) Lehman of Berne and Cindy (Ramon) Garcia of Fishers, Ind.; daughter-in-law, Ann Litwiller of Peoria, Ill.; two sisters, Delores Moorman of Warsaw and Juanita (Jim) Adams of Berne; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grand children.

Sherri L. Longenberger

    Sherri L. Longenberger, 49, of Bluffton, passed away at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at her residence.
    Sherri was born in Adams County on October 11, 1963, to Doyle W. and the late Bonnie L. (Baumgartner) Frauhiger.
    She married Mark A. Longenberger in Bluffton on June 7, 1981; he survives.

Gordon C. Suman

    Gordon C. Suman, 87, of Decatur, passed away Friday, April 19, 2013, at Woodcrest Nursing Center.
    He was born in Decatur on April 23, 1925, to the late Harry and Bessie (Drummond) Suman.
    Gordon married Lois Eileen Miller on March 28, 1947, in Van Wert, Ohio; she preceded him in death on June 16, 2007.
