City’s latest target: Dilapidated garages

    Operation Cleanup in Decatur is targeting dilapidated garages and accessory structures, board of works and safety member and Code Enforcement Officer Bill Karbach told city council this week.
    Karbach said 15 such structures have been identified. Owners of the buildings will be notified to contact his department within 10 days of the notice, he said. Failure to comply could result in the city’s removal of the nuisance and the property owner will be assessed the cost.

Starfire fans are last ones standing

The South Adams Starfires’ upset victory over county rival Adams Central in sectional football play on Nov. 1, coupled with the untimely exit from the tournament trail the following day of the Bellmont volleyball squad, leaves South Adams as the last fan base standing in Adams County. Those fans are certain to be vocal when the Stars travel to Southwood Friday night for the sectional title game.

Raymond J. Rolston

    Raymond J. Rolston, Jr., 86, Decatur, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013, at Lutheran Hospital.
    He was born Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1926, in Decatur to the late Raymond and Molly Mae (Derringer) Rolston Sr. He married Betty J. Jarmon Jan. 13, 1948 in Decatur; she survives.

Schools awarded safety grant funding

    The three school districts in Adams County have been awarded a total of $110,050 in Secured School Safety grants to fund School Resource Officers and make other security equipment upgrades.
    Indiana Governor Mike Pence announced more than $9 million in grant funding to local schools and school corporations through the statewide program. The Indiana Secured School Safety Board approved the grants.

Final touches put on Decatur’s open burning ordinance

    Changes in Decatur’s ordinance governing burning of items within the city limits were given two rounds of approval at Tuesday night’s city council meeting, and will come up for a final vote Nov. 19.
    Going over an early draft, city officials discussed updates to the ordinance at the previous meeting. Several parts of the proposal were questioned, so it went back to City Attorney Tim Baker for revisions. Those revisions were unveiled Tuesday night and satisfied members of city council.

Geneva wrestles with IDEM mandates

    Kevin Green, a representative of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, addressed the Geneva Town Council at Tuesday night’s regular monthly meeting concerning recommendations for altering processes and meeting state regulations at the town’s wastewater treatment plant.

    Evelyn A. Purdy, 80, Berne, passed away at 12:04 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4, 2013, at Swiss Village.
    She was born on Saturday, Feb. 18, 1933, in Adams County to the late Eugene and Leona (Kneuss) Snow. She married her high school sweetheart, the late Roscoe J. Purdy Sunday, June 17, 1751, in Geneva.

Former Squaw Kuhnle makes mark at Ancilla

    SUGAR GROVE, IL – The Ancilla College women’s basketball team opened their season at the Waubonsee Classic, where they were defeated by Waubonsee Community College and Kennedy-King College.
    Friday night, the Chargers faced the Chiefs of WCC, in a back and forth battle that resulted in a 20-20 tie at halftime. The Chiefs’ offense, however, proved to be overpowering in the second half, scoring 43 points and defeating Ancilla with a final score of 63-49.

    Timothy E. "Tim" Bowers, 32, Decatur, passed away Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, at Lutheran Hospital as the result of a tragic hunting accident.
    He was born Feb. 18, 1981, to Charles and Carol (LaFontaine) Bowers; they survive.
    He married Abbey Logan on Aug. 3, 2013; she survives.
    Tim was a member of Saint Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and its Knights of Colubus Msgr. Seimetz Council 864. He was the owner of 5 Points Transmission.
