Squaws roll in tri-meet with New Haven, DeKalb

    The well-oiled Bellmont girls track machine kept humming on all cylinders Tuesday night pounding out decisive victories over Northeast Hoosier Conference foes New Haven and DeKalb.
    Bellmont rolled out 85 points compared to 42 for DeKalb and 37 for New Haven.

North Adams brings back Brent Lehman

    Former Bellmont High School assistant principal Brent Lehman, a 34-year veteran educator and lifelong Adams County resident, was introduced Tuesday evening as the new superintendent at North Adams Community Schools.
    Lehman was one of 10 applicants and five finalists for the position and will succeed Dr. Wylie Sirk when Sirk's retirement takes effect on July 1.

Adams Central taps native of Indiana

    When Adams Central Superintendent Mike Pettibone announced his retirement at the end of this school year in January, thoughts immediately turned to finding a replacement for the well-liked leader of AC. Members of the Board of Education announced Tuesday evening they feel they've done just that, naming Lori Richmond as the new superintendent.

Markle resident gets SA post

    The South Adams School Board announced at Tuesday's meeting that Shellie Miller will take over as the South Adams Elementary School principal, effective July 1.
    A Markle resident, Miller began her education career in 1999 as a Reading Recovery and Title 1 teacher at Lancaster Elementary in the Northern Wells district. She served as the principal of Ossian Elementary from 2004-2010, and has been the principal of Churubusco Elementary since 2010.

     The top brackets have been tabulated with the final results listed below. Only those brackets in the top 10 have been sorted out of ties for prize distribution purposes. Every other bracket past the top 10 that finished in a tie was not separated but kept as a tie to simplify the grading process. 

      The top 10 brackets are shown with an asterisk (*). Prize winners will be conacted to redeem their reward. Must have a photo id when collecting prizes.

    Julia Carolyn "Judy" Bertram passed away Saturday, April 6, 2013, at Lakeland Home in Angola.
    Judy was born in Decatur on April 26, 1918, daughter of Roman R. Parent and Clara A. Tricker Parent.
    She lived most of her adult life in Fort Wayne and had spent the last nine years at her home at Lake George. She graduated from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Fort Wayne in 1939. She was a cat lover, bird watcher and avid cook book collector.

Garald A. Lutz

    Garald A. “Gary” Lutz, 62, of Geneva, passed away Saturday, April 6, 2013, at Persimmon Ridge Rehabilitation Center in Portland.
    He was born April 9, 1950, in Elkhart, to the late Ramon R. and Wilma M. “Polly” (Kline) Lutz.
    Gary was employed as a machinist for more than 35 years with several manufacturers in the northwest Indiana area. He enjoyed spending time fishing, hunting and playing billiards.
He was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.

Park boards merger eyed

    The announced retirement early next year of the superintendent of the Decatur-Adams County Parks and Recreation department sparked conversations at back-to-back meetings on Monday about the possibility of merging the county and city park boards and realigning the department.

No charges brought in 2012 buggy triple fatal

    Adams County Prosecutor Chris Harvey announced Tuesday that no charges will be filed in the April 17, 2012 accident that killed Jerry (17), Barbara (5) and Enos (3) Schwartz when a van, driven by Chandler T. Gerber, 21, of Bluffton, struck the rear of the buggy they were riding in. The children's mother, Mary, also suffered serious injuries in the accident.

Sirk delivers final State of Schools

    North Adams Superintendent Wylie Sirk gave his last State of the Schools address on Monday. In the address, he explained how North Adams uses technology as a tool to teach students "21st century skills" needed to accomplish their life goals.
    Dr. Sirk has three children who were educated in the North Adams Schools and he thanked the administrators, teachers, and other employees who currently work or used to work in the school system for the work they do.
