Yields are up, but commodity prices are down, as farmers in Adams County put the finishing touches on the 2013 harvest season.
After a 2012 growing season adversely affected by lingering dry weather, corn crop yields in the county are showing a marked improvement over last year, said Dawn Hummel, program technician for the Adams County office of the Farm Service Agency.
In an effort to insure that all members of the nation’s armed forces receive their holiday gifts, packages and correspondence in time for the holidays, Decatur Postmaster Weston Worth has released dates by which items need to be postmarked in order to arrive at their destination in a timely fashion.
According to Worth, “We want to remind customers about these important mailing dates” which “will help ensure cards, letters and packages arrive in time for the holidays.”

The first Adams County Jail was built in 1839 from hand-hewn lumber at a cost to taxpayers of $325. It was replaced in 1886 by a newer, brick building which served the county for nearly the next 100 years.
A Decatur man, Timothy E. Bowers, 32, died Sunday evening at Lutheran Hospital following a hunting accident Saturday afternoon.
According to information provided by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources which investigated the accident, Bowers was deer hunting from an elevated stand in a tree and fell approximately 16 feet to the ground. He was said to be hunting with a friend but at the time of the accident was by himself. When he did not return to meet his friend at an arranged time, the friend, unidentified by IDNR officials, went looking for Bowers.
While many Americans will held to the polls Tuesday to cast their ballots for (or against) various candidates and issues, Adams County voters will sit this one out.
The 2013 general election is the type which comes about every four years locally — one in which there is no reason for county residents to head for the polls on the first Tuesday following the first Monday of November.
Marcella L. Driscoll, 90, Fort Wayne, died Oct. 31, 2013, at Parkview Regional Medical Center.
She was born on April 21, 1923, in New Haven to the late Karl and Anna (Witte) Bradtmueller. She married Marion W. Driscoll; and he survives.
Marcella worked at General Electric for 36 years. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, the Church Alter Guild and Ladies Society, Elex Club and G.E. Quarter Century Club. She also volunteered at Woodview Nursing Home and Byron Healthcare.
Dorothy A. Graft, 87, Fort Wayne, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, at Woodview Healthcare in Fort Wayne.
She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church and spent the past 12 years at Woodview Healthcare where she met many dear friends. She enjoyed Pokeno, Bingo and weekly church services.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles in 1995; an infant son; and three siblings, Lois Graft, Evelyn Auman and Delmar Thieme.
Joseph W. Schwartz, 45, Geneva, died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, at his residence.
He was born July 19, 1968, in Adams County to Joseph K. and Elizabeth R. Schwartz; they survive. He was an Old Order Amish.
TERRE HAUTE—Solid performances were turned in Saturday by both Bellmont runner Bailey Beery and the SA boys cross country team at the annual IHSAA cross country state finals meet at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course located near the Indiana State University campus.
