The way in which Berne united following the death in 2012 of Spc. Nick Taylor, killed in Afghanistan while serving as a member of the Indiana National Guard, was an example of the community's strength and resolve of Berne and demonstrated why the city "is a great place to call home," Mayor Bill McKean said Tuesday during his second annual State of the City address.
McKean gave his remarks during a noon luncheon hosted by the Berne Chamber of Commerce.
Administrators in the North Adams Community Schools have been deemed eligible for performance bonuses for the 2012-13 school year. The school district's board of education on Tuesday evening approved one-time stipends for administrators that are identical to those for which teachers in the district may qualify.

FORT WAYNE—Blackhawk Christian won the battle of the Braves on Tuesday night defending their home court on senior night against Bellmont, 45-40 in a non-conference game of round ball.
The 1A Braves were led down the stretch by their sophomore point guard Riley Reimschisel who scored on four free throws down the stretch and made a 15-foot jumper to keep pace ahead of Bellmont in the fourth quarter.
Raymond L. Boggs, 80, of Bryant, Ind., passed away at 10:15 p.m. on Saturday, February 9, 2013, at his residence in Bearcreek Township, Jay County.
He was born on Friday, September 9, 1932, in Harlan, Ind., to the late Henry and Martha (Griffin) Boggs.
Raymond married Carolyn Shannon on Tuesday, November 4, 1952, in Van Wert, Ohio; she survives.
Timothy A. Gase, 50, of Decatur, died at his residence on Saturday, February 9, 2013.
Tim was born on July 9, 1962, in Decatur, to Donald L. and Carol J. (Schuller) Gase; they survive.
Tim was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in New Haven. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Decatur. He worked for Gold Shield for 25 years, and then for R.M. Landscaping in Decatur. He was a 1981 graduate of Bellmont High School.
Margery D. Poole, 60, of Decatur, died on Sunday, February 10, 2013.
Among survivors are three sons, Heath Mendez and Holland Herman, both of Decatur, and Patrick Phillips of Fishers, Ind.; and daughter, Heidi Mendez of Decatur.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, February 14, at Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 15, also at the funeral home.
Richard W. "Hap" Sprunger, 67, of Decatur, passed away on Monday, February 11, 2013, in the Lutheran Hospital of Indiana.
Hap was born on Sunday, July 29, 1945, in Van Wert, Ohio, to the late Roman M. and Audra E. "Dollie" (Chronister) Sprunger.
He married Martha H. Bleeke on October 14, 1967, in Decatur; she passed away on April 29, 2009. He married Carolyn M. Lambert on November 10, 2012; she survives.
Sewage utility rates in Berne and Monroe will rise by more than 20 percent to pay for an upgrade to the Berne waste water treatment plant as mandated by state environmental officials.
The city is under orders from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) to reduce the amount of ammonia contained in waste water effluent that is being discharged from the plant to area rivers and streams. Improvements must be completed by 2015.
A Berne factory which began 2012 with 225 full-time employees and was down to 140 by year's end, now plans to move some of its operations to other plants and is seeking a buyer for the remainder of the business.
It is not clear how the remaining workers at Ficosa North America will be affected, officials said, although it's likely some will lose their jobs.
The movement of the work is expected to be completed by the end of May.
