Berne bank gets tax breaks

    The first step towards a renovation of the First Bank of Berne building was taken Monday as city council members approved a motion granting a tax abatement for redevelopment of the downtown property.
    Vice president and Chief Financial Officer Jason Hilty and Joe Caffee, a senior vice-president for the bank, met with council to discuss the company's plans for a new building. The bank, which has been at its current location since 1905, was last renovated in 1991, according to Hilty.

    Adams County Service Complex Maintenance Supervisor Dave Meyer updated the Adams County Commissioners on the status of several aspects surrounding the peace monument being constructed on the southwest corner of courthouse square.

Superb fall day

The second full day of autumn started out chilly on Monday, with temperatures in the high 30s, but the rapidly rising mercury made it a superb day to be on the local links. David A. Malone

    David A. Malone, 28, Decatur, died on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013, at Adams Memorial Hospital.
    He was born on June 5, 1985, to David P. Malone and Maurine A. Fidley.
    He was a member of The Bridge and was a student at Ivy Tech. He was active in area bowling circles.
    Among survivors are his mother and step-father, Kelly and Chris Carpenter of Decatur; a son, Bentley A. Malone (21 months); a brother, Chris Malone of Decatur; and a step-grandfather, Wayne Carpenter of Decatur.

Beverly K. Case

    Beverly K. Case, 72, Decatur died on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013 at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne as the result of a pedestrian-vehicle accident.
    She was born in Decatur on November 16, 1940 to the late Gilbert and Norma (Wefel) Thieme. She married Bud E. Case on October 11, 1986. He survives.
    Beverly was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and a former member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She had worked for Heller Insurance Agency and Graber Insurance Agency.

Diann L. McBride

    Diann L. McBride, 72, of Wren, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 21,2013 at the Van Wert Impatient Hospice Center.
    She was born on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 1941 in Sidney, Ohio to the late Gerhard Meyer and the late Myrtle (Dull) Meyer. She married the late Philip T. McBride in Aug. of 1961, he passed away on June 9, 2001.
    Diann was a member of Women of the Moose in Decatur and was a homemaker.

Bellmont golfers advance to regionals for 2nd straight year

    BLUFFTON — For the second year in a row, Bellmont has put girls golf on the radar in Indiana advancing to regionals with a third place finish Saturday at Timberridge Golf Course.
    The Squaws took the bronze medal with a team score of 368 qualifying as the last team to advance with Homestead winning the sectional outright with a score of 359 and Canterbury taking second at 365.
    "We all played great and the girls should be very proud!" exclaimed BHS coach Andy Heim after the sectional finish.

Rose E. Yoder

    Rose E. Yoder, 96, of Berne, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013 at her daughter's residence.
    She was born on Dec. 26, 1916 in Adams County to the late Jacob P. and Emily (Graber) Schwartz. She married the late Trueman E. Yoder on Jan. 30, 1941, he died in 1996.
    Rose was a homemaker and an Old Order Amish.

Fun times at St. Mary's Fall Festival

    St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Decatur held its annual Fall Festival over the recently-completed weekend. Festival spokesperson Judy Converset said the event was “bigger than ever. We sold more than 300 wristbands to children on Sunday alone and assuming they all had parents or grandparents there we are looking at a lot of people.”
