An early-morning crash just south of Decatur has claimed the life of a Decatur woman.
According to information released by the Adams County Sheriff's Department, emergency crews were dispatched at 2:28 a.m. today to U.S. 33 just southeast of Salem Road. The preliminary report states that a vehicle driven by Helen L. Cooper, 58, of Decatur, was traveling southbound on U.S. 33 and crossed the center line, striking a northbound vehicle driven by Michael G. Mitchel of Decatur.
Betty Newland, 86, of 277W 500N, in Bryant, passed away Sunday, September 8, 2013 at the home of her niece, Norma Nichols.
She was born in Byrant on December 6, 1926, to Oren and Minnie (Huey) Bergman. She married Carl Newland on December 6, 1947; he passed away January 4, 1994.
Betty was a member of New Corydon Church and attended Bryant schools. She was a homemaker and Amish hauler.
Ronald L. Smith, 66, of Decatur, died last Friday.

Betty J. Schmoll, 84, of Decatur, passed away at 5:40 p.m. on Sunday, September 8, 2013, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne.
Betty was born on Sunday, November 4, 1928, in Talmadge, Neb., to the late Fred G. and Iola (VanWinkle) Douglas. She married Glen E. Schmoll on July 7, 1946; he passed away February 8, 2009.

She was born on Friday, December 13, 1940, in Allen County to the late James Vinson and the late Vera (Kleber) Vinson.
She married Kenneth Bultemeier on April 4, 1959.
Dorothy was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hessen Cassel.
She was a retired secretary for East Allen County Schools at Heritage High School.
Wilma L. Hobbs, 63, of Decatur, passed away on Saturday, September 7, 2013, in the Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home in Fort Wayne.
She was born in Celina, Ohio, on Wednesday, July 19, 1950, to the late James B. Carter and the late Jessie (Myers) Carter.
She married the late Gerald Hobbs on December 28,1968, in Coldwater, Ohio, he passed away on May 8, 2011.
Wilma was a member of Cornerstone Community Church in Decatur and was a previous member of Covenant Chapel in Bluffton.
Warren J. Gidley, 80, passed away Friday, September 6, 2013 at Lutheran Hospital with his loving family at his side.
Warren was born in Fort Wayne.
He worked in sales with Fort Wayne Engraving for 35 years, retiring in 1995. He was a U.S. Army Korean WAr veteran and member of American Legion Post 296 and VFW Decatur Post 6236.
Warren loved the lake and spending time with his grandchildren and attending their sporting events. He was their No. 1 fan.
Cheryl L. Kempf, 56, of Decatur, passed away on Friday, September 6, 2013, at her residence.
She was born in Adams County on October 25, 1956, to Ronald R. and Phyllis M. (Moser) Black.
On August 1, 2000, she married Mark A. Kempf.
Claudine Mansfield, 91, of Decatur ,died today.
