Ugly wall to get facelift

    The Great Ugly Wall of Decatur looks like it will be getting a major facelift before winter sets in, and city council on Tuesday night took a major step toward securing a new — and much improved – city hall building.    

Sewer project gains interim financing

    Preliminary financing has been secured for a rural sewer project designed to serve approximately 265 Adams County households.
    The Adams County Regional Sewer District board of directors, with four members present, met in special session Tuesday morning to entertain quotes submitted for Bond Anticipation Notes for the estimated $4.5 million project to install the county's first-ever rural sewer in the outlying areas of Monmouth and Roe Acres, Bobo, Pleasant Mills and Arcadia Village.

A new city hall virtual certainty

    A onetime bank building has become money in the bank for the City of Decatur as it moves toward gaining a vastly larger and improved city hall building.
    Given four different plans for renovating the onetime First State Bank building downtown, council and Mayor John Schultz were in agreement on Tuesday night that option No. 4, with modifications, was the way they wanted to go.

Lady Jets shake off slow start; dump ‘Busco in four

    MONROE—An under-practiced rotation and possibly some jitters forced Adams Central to drop their first game against Churubusco at the Hangar on Tuesday night in their volleyball opener.
    It proved to be only a momentary scare for the Lady Jets, however, as they would go on to win 75 of the final 111 points in the match to dominate the Eagles in four sets 25-19, 17-25, 8-25, 11-25.

Tabitha Dee Cline

    Tabitha Dee "Bike" Cline, 96, of Bryant, passed away at 10:55 p.m. on Sunday, August 18, 2013, at her residence.
    Tabitha was born Thursday, November 30, Thanksgiving day, 1916, in Adams County, the daughter of the late John and Lucy (Decker) Teeter.
    She graduated from Geneva High School, Class of 1934. She married Marion F. Cline on Thursday, November 21, Thanksgiving day,1940, in Geneva. Marion passed away September 25, 1997.

Mary I. Jessup

August 20, 2013

    Mary I. Jessup, 97, formerly a lifelong resident of Decatur, died at 8:28 a.m. Monday, August 19, 2013, at The Village of Heritage in Monroeville, where she had been living for the past two and a half years.
    Mary was born September 29, 1915, in Fort Wayne to the late William F. and Florence (Stump) Kohls.
    She married Charles E. Jessup on July 1, 1951, in Decatur; he passed away January 20, 1996.

Rick A. Steiner

August 20, 2013

    Rick Alan Steiner, 58, of Berne went to be with the Lord on Monday, August 19, 2013, at 5:45 a.m. at home in his wife's arms, surrounded by family following an extended illness.
    Rick was born February 10, 1955, in Decatur to the late Merlin Steiner and Carolyn (Bixler) Steiner; his mother survives.
    He married Nancy Hurst on Mary 1, 1977, and she survives in Berne.

Jobless rate dips a bit

    The monthly jobless report issued Monday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development showed unemployment in Adams County declined by .2 percent during July from the previous month.

State Fair attendance record set

    Consistently sunny skies and below normal temperatures coupled with new exhibits and popular promotions helped the Indiana State Fair set a new total attendance record, according to an announcement by fair officials.
    The 157th edition of the fair, which wrapped up Sunday, attracted 978,296 people through the gates – 4,394 more visitors than the previous record of 973,902 in 2009 and a 15 percent increase from last year’s total of 853,941.

Complex may get new area to park

    The Adams County Service Complex may expand its parking capacity, according to County Attorney Mark Burry's report at Monday's commissioners meeting.
    Burry informed the commissioners that James and Carol McGill are prepared to sell the empty lot east of the gym entrance to the Complex, across Third Street. Burry said the McGills' years-old appraisal priced the lot at $34,000 and recommended that the commissioners order another appraisal to make sure that price is still accurate.
