James A. Gilbert

    James A. “Jim” Gilbert, 63, of Decatur, passed away on Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at Parkview Regional Medical Center.
    Jim was born on October 23, 1949, in Decatur to the late Ermal and Ardis (Brintzenhofe) Gilbert.
    On June 13, 1970, he married Susan K. Wolfe.
    Jim worked as a HVAC Tech for Wells Heating and Cooling for over 20 years.

Rose E. Lichtenberger

    Rose E. Lichtenberger, 81, of Wren, Ohio, died Thursday at CHP Inpatient Hospice Center in Van Wert, Ohio.
    Among survivors are her husband, Charles Lichtenberger of Wren; son, Gary (Gayle) Lichtenberger of Decatur; and two daughters, Joanne (Allen) Shinnaberry and Lois (Tod) Waltz, both of Van Wert.
    Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m. Sunday and 10-11 a.m. Monday at Cowan & Son Funeral Home in Van Wert. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday.

Jean C. Spade

    Jean C. Spade, 72, Berne, passed away August 8, 2013, at the Bluffton Regional Hospital.
    Jean was born to the late Robert and Priscilla (Lehman) Gerber on March 17, 1941.
    She married Donald W. Spade on September 2, 1960.
    She was a member of West Missionary Church. Jean worked for Dunbar Furniture, CTS Corp and retired from Berne Hi-Way Hatchery in 2005. Her special interests included crafts, such as making butterflies out of plastic bottles, cooking, sewing; and collecting dolls.

Squaws take home SA and Cross Creek invites

    The Bellmont ladies golf team has been busy before the beginning of the school season this week as they were winners of both their own home tournament on Tuesday at Cross Creek and then won the South Adams Invitational the very next day at the Golf Course of the Limberlost.
    In both events, the Squaws won by very narrow margins but coach Andy Heim was pleased with the final results.
    "We played well and beat some very good teams this week," Heim noted. "We are playing awesome right now."

World War II vets sought

    Turns out U.S. Rep. Marlin Stutzman won't be there after all, but two state legislators will and, it's hoped, so will World War II veterans in Adams County as the rededication of the Peace Monument is held on Saturday, August 24 in Decatur.
    The event to mark the 100th anniversary of the first monument built in the U.S. to be dedicated to peacetime will begin at 2:30 p.m., a time change made to accommodate Stutzman, who has since said he will be unable to attend.

Sewer bond quotes eyed – Next step in $4.5M project

    Area lending institutions have been asked to submit quotes by August 20 for the issuance of $500,000 in bond anticipation notes for a rural sewer project designed to serve approximately 265 Adams County households.
    Securing the preliminary funding is the next step in an estimated $4.5 million project by the Adams County Regional Sewer District to install the county's first-ever rural sewer in the outlying areas of Monmouth and Roe Acres, Bobo, Pleasant Mills and Arcadia Village.

SA board okays migrant program trailer purchase

    At a South Adams School Board special meeting this week, Susie Amstutz and Superintendent Scott Litwiller presented a request to the board regarding a sort of "facility upgrade" for the Migrant Education Learning Center.
