Work on monument to begin

    Work to reinstall a waterfall fountain on the north side of the Peace Monument in Decatur is scheduled to begin next week as the date for the monument's rededication draws ever nearer.
    Joe H. Construction of Berne is the general contractor for the project, supported by subcontractors Don R. Myers Plumbing & Heating of Berne, Kiess Electric of Decatur and Berne Ready Mix. The latter has already measured the monument for the addition of the limestone.

Ahead of the Curb takes home Senior League crown

     Senior League Softball champions for 2013, Ahead of the Curb Driving Academy took the hard way through the playoffs coming through the loser's bracket.
    Eventually, however, the squad of girls overcame Barker's in the semi-finals, then defeated Mind's Eye Graphics twice on Thursday night to become league champions.   

Dean E. Hendricks

    Dean E. Hendricks, 75, Berne, passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at his home.
    Dean was born to the late Charles and Nolda (Agler) Hendricks on June 24, 1938, in Adams County.
    He married Myrna Habegger on October 3, 1959, in Berne; she survives.

Robert E. Meyer

    Robert E. Meyer, 85, of Decatur, died Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at Adams Memorial Hospital.
    Robert was born December 20, 1927, in Adams County, to the late Arthur C. amd Beulah (Nichols) Meyer.
    On May 13, 1950, he married Helen J. Geimer; she preceded him in death on March 10, 2012.

Ilo M. Putman

    Ilo Mae Putman, 91, died Wednesday July 17, 2013, at her home in Decatur
    Ilo was born February 10, 1922, in Whitley County to the late Ralph and Glenna Clark.  Over the years Ilo worked at U.S. Rubber, Wayne Novelty, and was a waitress at the Pancake House. She was also secretary and treasurer of the Piqua Estates Mobile Home Court.
    She was an avid gardener and loved travelling.

Monabelle M. Thomas

July 19, 2013

    Monabelle M. Thomas, 94, passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at Heritage Park Assisted Living in Fort Wayne.
    Born in Fort Wayne, Monabelle worked in accounting with Russ Moore Transmission.  She was a member of Sweet Adelines Singing Group, attended church at First Assembly of God, and was one of the original mall walkers at Glenbrook Mall for over 40 years. She loved colorful flowers.

County jobless rate up .8

    The monthly jobless report issued Thursday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development showed that unemployment in Adams County jumped by .8 percent in Adams County during June.
    After registering unemployment rates of 6.8 percent in both April and May, Thursday's report listed the county's jobless level at 7.6 percent for last month. That rate was still the second lowest in northeast Indiana, bested only by Wells County's 7.5 percent, and 32nd lowest among Indiana's 92 counties.

Hospice helps patient reunite with his family

    State of the Heart Hospice patient Robert Clark had a dream: He wanted to see his new granddaughter while he was still living and he wanted to see his daughter and his other granddaughter.
    The Dream Foundation, based in Santa Barbara, California and State of the Heart made that dream come true.

Wrapping up the 21st year

    Adam Eguia professed success and dished out considerable appreciation as he made his final report on the city's 2013 fireworks festival to city council this week.
    "I have received a lot of great comments on this year's show, and one complaint, but the person that complained about the show watched them from their house," he said.
    "I only saw one dog (banned from the grounds) and a few personal fireworks (also banned), but when the rules were explained, all went well," he said.

    Dean E. Hendricks, 75, of Berne, died Wednesday.
    Arrangements are pending at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home.
