T'birds return from Cooperstown with memories

     Is one baseball tournament worth three years of preparation?
    The easy answer is: definitely not!
    However, if you ask the members of the Decatur Thunderbirds, you're going to get another answer entirely.
    "It was an experience of a lifetime," commented Kevin Brown, the key pitcher in THE game of the big week for the Birds, won after 11 innings of battle.

Firefighters save dog, aid its club

    At a recent 4-H Dog Club practice in Monroe, Decatur Fire Chief Les Marckel delivered a $100 sponsorship check to the club.
    There is a very special connection between Ivy Settlemyre, a nine-year member of the club and drill team captain, and the Decatur Fire Department. Members of the department saved her Australian Shepherd, named Brody, from a fire at the Settlemyre home on Parkview Drive in March of 2011.

Rain mostly holds off for city event

    Mother Nature did her part as a large crowd in a festive mood turned out on Thursday night for the city's annual Fourth of July celebration.
    A few off and on sprinkles were all the crowd had to deal with, but the rain picked up within moments of a great Grand Finale which wound up the 21-minute display.
    Command Ssgt. Major Fritz Bultemeyer, Adams County's Service Officer, was the featured speaker.

Geneva Town Council gets budget proposal

    Clerk-Treasurer Bill Warren presented his proposed budget for 2014 to the Geneva Town Council at its meeting this week.
    There was additional money included for a police car, as the police have under-spent their budget so far this year.
    Warren said that the budget will definitely be submitted on time, in order to avoid being rejected and having to request additional appropriations to bring the funds from their 2013 numbers to the proposed 2014 numbers. However, no numbers for the budget have been released yet.

Ronnie L. Gephart

    Ronnie L. Gephart, 75, Decatur, passed away Thursday, July 4, 2013, at Chalet Village in Berne.
    Ronnie was born Friday, August 27, 1937, in rural Wren, Ohio, to the late Basil and Lolo (Drake) Gephart.
    He married Ramona K. Gattshall on June 30, 1957, in Chattanooga, Ohio; she survives in Decatur.
    Ronnie was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Decatur. He was a farmer and had worked at Phelps Dodge Magnet Wire Company for 46 years, retiring in 2002.

Geraldine Townsend

    Geraldine "Gerry" McKay Townsend, age 88, passed away July 2, 2013, at Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home in Fort Wayne.
    Gerry was born April 18, 1925, in Florenceville, New Brunswick, Canada, to Charles R. and Helen Orchard McKay.
    Gerry was a member of Brookside Church in Fort Wayne and had worked as a dental assistant for many years. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmorther, whose life revolved around her family, whom she loved dearly.
