Fall inside silo sends Bunge employee to hospital

    A probable fall inside one of the tall silos at Bunge North America on Decatur's north side sent a flurry of rescuers from the Decatur Fire Department, police department and paramedic units to the scene, not knowing what they would find upon arrival.
    Bunge Safety Manager Gary Teeple said the bottom of the enormous structures are not flat but cylindrical in shape, making maneuverability difficult at times for workers.

    Violet I. LaBrun, 92, of Chattanooga, Ohio, died Thursday.
    Arrangements are pending at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home, Berne.

Lehman says gay marriage ruling weakens foundation

    State Rep. Matt Lehman said Thursday has was "disappointed" in a pair of  U.S. Supreme Court rulings announced one day earlier that struck down the federal Defense of Marriage Act and invalidated a California law banning same-sex marriage.

Hospital bottom line ever blacker

    Thanks to a continuing effort to reduce expenses, the Adams Memorial Hospital (AMH) financial sheet presented to the Adams Health Network (AHN) Board of Trustees Wednesday night shows a solid bottom line for the year with the network having an $814,570 surplus.
    When the 2013 budget was adopted last year, it was anticipated a surplus of just under $130,000 would be on the books at this time but budgeted expenses for the year have been significantly down.

Bellmont grad finds a summer niche

    A 2007 Bellmont High School graduate, Alicia Drier, has found a good way to spend her summer. She's co-directing Romeo and Juliet with Shakespeare From The Heart, an acting company that presents plays to raise funds for local charities.
    The group has been a nonprofit organization in Fort Wayne for about 10 years, performing a summer show and a winter show each year with volunteers in the community.

Half inch of rain here

    A huge black cloud moved over Decatur a little after 6 p.m. on Wednesday, and while it was ominous looking, there was no storm beyond a few bolts of lightning and some thunder.
    Officials at the city weather station recorded .53 of an inch of rain. It was the fourth consecutive day that rain has been recorded here.
    A high of 86 degrees followed Tuesday's high of 90 in Decatur.

Poe native takes hospital post

    The Adams Health Network (AHN) will welcome a Poe native who has a strong background in working with physicians and their practices to become its new Director of Physician and Provider Services effective July 29, it was announced at Wednesday night's meeting of the AHN Board of Trustees.

St. Mark’s gearing up for car show and more

    Various events, including the Sweet Chariots Car Show, are scheduled for Saturday, July 9, at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, US 224 West.
    Organizers said approximately $3,000 was raised during last year's event and distributed to St. Mark's missions, such as St. Mark’s Food Pantry, Adams-Wells Crisis Shelter, Habitat for Humanity, Love INC. and the church's Red Bird Mission Team.

Sportsform wins Clemente title

CLEMENTE FINAL
    The Clemente league championship trophy was played for on Tuesday night at Hanna Nuttman Park by the two remaining squads including Bleeke Electric out of the loser's bracket and Sportsform the team who put them there earlier in the tourney.
    In game one, Bleeke defeated Sportform by a score of 25-20 forcing a second contest.

Dennis M. Atkinson

    Dennis "Denny" Michael Atkinson, 64, of Montpelier, died Monday at Markle Health Care in Markle.
    Among survivors are his mother, Norma “Joan” Lodge of Marion; wife, Martha Atkinson of Montpelier; son, Dennis Wygant of Berne; two daughters, Julie Wygant and Favor Stanford, both of Berne; and stepson, Shawn Uptgraft of Fort Wayne.
    Per his request, there will be no viewing or services.
    Arrangements are being handled by Walker & Glancy Funeral Home in Montpelier.
