Building trades class alive...for now

    Another nail was driven into the future of the Building Trades program Tuesday as the Adams Central Board of Education picked up where it left off at last month's meeting and issued a reduction in force (RIF) notice to teacher Andy Hackenjos.

Sirk: ‘It’s been very good ride’

    The tribute to Dr. Wylie Sirk as he nears the end of his career as an educator was befitting the man himself: brief, direct, respectful and dignified.
    The North Adams school board bid farewell to Sirk at the end of Tuesday night's board meeting in simple fashion, with a few kind words and a gift as a token of their appreciation for his years of service to the school board. A few former board members were on hand for the occasion as well.

SAdams votes to keep RISQ, Life Matters, resource officer

    On Tuesday night, the South Adams School Board decided to continue several programs, including Life Matters Counseling, RISQ, and the School Resource Officer. The programs were formerly funded by the Safe Schools Healthy Students grant, which expired this year.

William F. Rumschlag

June 11, 2013

    William F. Rumschlag, 78, of Decatur, died Monday, June 10, 2013, at Adams Memorial Hospital.
    Bill was born on February 22, 1935, in Adams County to the late Bernard and Hilda (Coyne) Rumschlag.
    He was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus 864 and Decatur Eagles Lodge. He served in the United States Army.

Eugene R. Vetter

    Eugene R. Vetter, 78, passed away June 6, 2013.
    Among survivors are his companion, Judy Eggert; children, Randy (Dianna) Vetter, Cindy (Dan) Gerber, Marilyn (Curt) Main, Tamara (Stewart) Gase, and Gary (Lori) Vetter; 40 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Lydia; sisters, Carol Meyers, Gloria Nelson, and Virginia (Alan) Miller; many nieces and nephews; and extended family through Judy, Bob (Debbie) Eggert and Jeff (Julie) Eggert.
    Eugene was preceded in death by his son, Dennis Vetter.

Relay for Life gearing up

    This year's Relay for Life will be held at Adams Central School beginning at noon on Saturday, June 22, and ending at 10 a.m. on Sunday, June 23.
    All local and area residents are invited and strongly encouraged to attend this meaningful event to support survivors and their caregivers, a news release said. This year's theme is "Celebrating With Colors."

Berne okays big tax break

    Two weeks after putting in place Adams County's first so-called "super abatement" phase-in policy to encourage and reward local job development, Berne City Council on Monday approved a five-year waiver of all real and personal property tax liability for the FCC (Adams) automotive supply company. Under the terms of the new tax abatement policy, the company will receive 100 percent tax freedom for five years and partial tax relief for five additional years.

Monroe breaks ground for fire station

    Representatives from the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department, Arnold Construction, and Town of Monroe gathered on Friday to break ground for the construction of a new fire station located at 233 Tower Dr. in the Monroe Industrial park.
    The new facility, designed by Arnold Construction and past employee Corey DeRoo, of Monore, includes a 4,800 square foot, eight-bay garage to house all of the departments fire trucks and tankers.

Carol A. Graham

    Carol A. Graham, 68, of Rockford, Ohio, died at 12:19 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2013, at In-Patient Hospice Center in Van Wert, Ohio.
    Carol was born on January 5, 1945, in Decatur, to the late Charles and Mary H. (Bollenbacher) Baker.
    On August 23, 1969, she married Robert S. Graham; he preceded her in death on January 27, 2012.

Nick L. Secaur

    Nick L. Secaur, 75, of Decatur, passed away at 3:12 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2013, at his residence.
    Nick was born Monday, January 17, 1938, in Adams County, to the late Kenneth and Lucille (DeBolt) Secaur.
    He married Carla Snyder on July 11, 1959; she passed away March 13, 2001. He married Karen Heckert on November 23, 2002, at the New Life Fellowship Church in Decatur; she survives.
