West Nile Virus found here

    Adams County Sanitarian/'Environmental Director Terry Smith said Monday that his department has been notified by Bryan Price, Senior Medical Entomologist from the Indiana State Department of Health, that the first positive pool in Indiana of Culex mosquitoes infected with West Nile Virus was confirmed in a sample that was discovered in Decatur.

RISQ, Life Matters live on at AC

    With the Safe Schools, Healthy Students (SSHS) grant ending, and the anonymous donor who was going to fund Adams County Schools programs – such as school resource officers, Life Matters counseling, and the Reduce misbehavior, Improve attitudes, each Skills, build Quality students (RISQ) program – recanting the offer in the 11th hour, the future of these programs was uncertain at best.
    They are no longer uncertain at Adams Central.

County wants new park-rec pact

    County Attorney Mark Burry advised the county commissioners at their weekly meeting on Monday to re-examine their agreement with the parks and recreation department.
    Burry noted that the department seems to be in flux with the potential replacement of Superintendent Steve Krull, who is retiring at the end of the year. From May 2009-January 2013, the county paid the city of Decatur one third of the superintendent's salary.

    Kathleen Gross, 72, of Decatur, died Saturday.

High grass? Here's number to call

    As the citywide cleanup effort continues in Decatur, it was pointed out at a recent city council meeting that anyone who wishes to complain about high grass, junk vehicles and the like in their neighborhood should call 724-3814 to lodge the complaint.
    That is the City Hall number of the building and zoning department, from where an investigation would be launched.

Prison term for beating of bartender

    John R. Case, 56, Berne, pleaded guilty this week in Wells Superior Court to one count of battery resulting in bodily injury, a Class A misdemeanor, and one count of possession of marijuana, a Class D felony.
    He was arrested in January after beating a bartender at the Moose Lodge and Family Center in the Bluffton -Banner parking lot.

AC staff changes set; Fawcett exits track post

    More staffing changes are coming to Adams Central as the board of education approved several personnel moves Tuesday.
    High school cross country coach Terry Fawcett submitted his letter of resignation, effective immediately. Fawcett said he has thoroughly enjoyed the kids he has coached through the years and thanked the athletic department for their support over the years.

Former Squaw Harvey wins MVP at Champions Meet

    FORT WAYNE—If track experts in Ohio and Michigan had never heard of Bellmont's Alexis Harvey, they have now after her Saturday performance at the 39th annual Midwest Meet of Champions at Northrop High School.
    Harvey placed first in two events and second in another in her three races at the meet which featured the many of the best recent graduating class athletes in the tri-state area and earned Harvey the "Star of the Stars" award for the meet.

Mary L. Alberding

    Mary L. Alberding, 90, of Decatur, died Friday, June 14, 2013, at Woodcrest Nursing Center.
    Mary was born on November 14, 1922, in Decatur to the late Herman F. and Matilda A. (Heimann) Geimer.
    On August 5, 1947, she married Leo W. Alberding; he preceded her in death on October 20, 1992.
    Mary was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. She was a homemaker and also worked for North Adams Community School for 28 years in the cafeteria.

Jo A. Hirschy

    Jo Ann Hirschy, 51, of Monroe, passed away on Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at Adams Memorial Hospital.
    Jo was born on November 17, 1961, in Huntington to Gary “Joe” and Judy (Pursley) Craig; they survive in Liberty Center.
    On October 30, 2004, she married Rick Hirschy; he survives in Monroe.
    Jo was a member of Liberty Center Baptist Church and attended Monroe United Brethren. She worked for Peyton’s in Bluffton.
