James F. Klenk

June 26, 2013

    James F. “Jim” Klenk, 74, of Decatur, passed away Monday, June 25, 2013, at Parkview Regional Medical Center.
    Jim was born on April 19, 1939, in Decatur to the late Ferdinand and Frances Josephine “Jo” (Hall) Klenk.
    On September 5, 1981, he married Sandra L. Dewells; she survives in Decatur.

Thomas E. Levy

    Thomas E. Levy, 60, Fort Wayne, passed away Monday, June 24, 2013, at Bluffton Regional Medical Center in Bluffton.
    Born in Logansport, Ind., Tom was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. When he was in school, he ran track and was very involved in sports. Tom graduated from Snider in 1971 and was accepted into the pharmaceutical program at Purdue upon graduating. He loved to play cards and fish. Tom absolutely loved celebrating every holiday on the calendar.

Ruben M. Schwartz

    Ruben M. Schwartz, 70, of Berne, died Tuesday at his residence.
    Among survivors are his wife, Ada E.(Wickey) Schwartz of Berne; son, Leander A.R. (Mandy E.) Schwartz of Berne; six daughters, Mary A.R. (Solomn S.) Wickey of Auburn; Lucy A.R. (Jacob E.R.) Girod and Judy A.R. (James N.) Girod, both of Berne; Ruth A.R. (Reuben E.J.) Schwartz, Elma A.R. (Enos E.J.) Schwartz, and Ada A.R. (William L.) Christner, all of Bryant; 74 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

    Carmen Justice Wilks, 79, of Warren, Ind., passed away on June 24, 2013, at her residence.
    Carmen was born in Marion, Ind., on November 12, 1933, to the late Enos and Olive (Heal) Justice.

John W. Wittwer

June 26, 2013

    John W. Wittwer, 57, of Monroe, died Monday, June 24, 2013, at Bluffton Regional Hospital.
    John was born on August 24, 1955, in Decatur, to the late Wayne T. and Dolores M. (Beard) Wittwer.
    On May 31, 1974 he married Janice R. Ross; she survives in Monroe.

County to dissolve park-rec pact

    Adams County Attorney Mark Burry presented to the county commissioners at their meeting on Monday the letter he has drafted to dissolve the county's agreement with Decatur's parks and recreation department, as the department will soon undergo major changes.
    The commissioners approved the letter, emphasizing a need to meet with Mayor John Schultz, potentially to discuss a new agreement.

Berne 2-step hike of sewer rates is likely

    Berne City Council, during an informal discussion near the end of Monday evening's regularly-scheduled meeting, voted to direct its rate consultant to draft a two-phase increase in city sewage utility rates.
    Jeffrey Rowe from Umbaugh and Associates, the city's rate consulting firm, earlier this month presented several rate options for city officials to consider in conjunction with a state-mandated upgrade to Berne's waste water plant.

Lots of stuff for the buses

    This year's United Way of Adams County (UW) Stuff-A-Bus campaign was a major success, United Way officials said.
    "This year surpassed previous years with literally hundreds of items being donated, giving a boost to our volunteer food banks that constantly run low on supplies needed to help area residents," said a statement from the agency.
    Officials of United Way and the eight participating county food banks said they thanked everyone who participated.

Judy A. Heller

    Judy A. Heller, 67, of Decatur, passed away Sunday, June 23, 2013, in her home.
    Born in Fort Wayne on October 5, 1945, she was the daughter of the late Dick and Elizabeth (Rider) Clay.
    A 1963 graduate of Monroeville High School, Judy retired from the State of Indiana Welfare Department in 2003 as a case worker. Prior to working for the state, she started and ran her own ceramic business called The Clay Corner. She started her thriving business in her home and eventually moved it to downtown Decatur.

Crone retires; hiring freeze break okayed

    Prosecutor Chris Harvey attended Monday's county commissioners meeting to request a break in the hiring freeze in order to replace chief investigator Bill Crone, who retired at the beginning of June.
    Harvey said he needed to fill Crone's full-time position, which by statute is funded by the county. He added that in his opinion, the successor should have law enforcement training, and he plans to advertise the position after meeting with the council at the beginning of July to get the salary approved.
