Carol A. Graham, 68, of Rockford, Ohio, died at 12:19 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2013, at In-Patient Hospice Center in Van Wert, Ohio.
Carol was born on January 5, 1945, in Decatur, to the late Charles and Mary H. (Bollenbacher) Baker.
On August 23, 1969, she married Robert S. Graham; he preceded her in death on January 27, 2012.
Nick L. Secaur, 75, of Decatur, passed away at 3:12 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2013, at his residence.
Nick was born Monday, January 17, 1938, in Adams County, to the late Kenneth and Lucille (DeBolt) Secaur.
He married Carla Snyder on July 11, 1959; she passed away March 13, 2001. He married Karen Heckert on November 23, 2002, at the New Life Fellowship Church in Decatur; she survives.
Billy L. "Bill" Smith, 54, Berne, passed away Friday, June 7, 2013, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Among survivors are his mother, Barbara (Frederick) Sprunger; wife, Jodi Smith; and daughter, Cari Reiley, all of Berne.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Geneva.
James “Jim” Joseph Voglewede, 79, of Decatur, passed away Saturday, June 8, 2013, at Adams Memorial Hospital.
Jim was born November 18, 1933, in Decatur to the late Raymond and Mary (Meyer) Voglewede.
On May 3, 1958, he married Rowena Ellen Merriman; she survives in Decatur.
Helen L. Wellman, 90, of Decatur, passed away Thursday, June 6, 2013, at Adams Memorial Hospital.
Helen was born in Jay County on October 21, 1922, to the late Jerome and Agnus (Krieg) Wellman.
She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, where she was in the Women of St. Mary’s. She was a member of Our Lady’s Rosary Makers of Holy Trinity Parish in Bryant, Ind., where she made 3,955 rosaries from 1994-2006. She retired from General Electric and was a member of the G.E. retirees.
The 19th annual Special Needs Resident Auction took place Saturday at Golden Meadows Home near Decatur.
The auction serves as the home’s main fundraiser for the year. Auction items were donated by local businesses and members of the community.
In just a few hours, the 50-plus buyers in attendance cleared eight tables and one garage full of auction items. Donated items included food, gift certificates, beauty products, tickets to sporting events and theme parks and even a refrigerator.
Although the newly proposed addition of Monroe Township, which lies within the corporation limits of Monroe, to the Adams Public Library System (APLS) isn't a matter for the Monroe Town Council to act on, it quickly became an issue during Thursday's meeting after council president, and town resident Al Lehman read a lengthy and somewhat inflammatory letter expressing his feelings on the matter.
Artist Gary Hovey of New Knoxville, Ohio, has spent the past 25 years sculpting, something he loves to do. What makes Hovey's sculptures unique is the medium used to create his masterpieces: stainless steel flatware. Forks, spoons, knives, you name it, and he's probably used it.
Hovey said about 35 years ago he and his wife visited an art show where one sculptor in particular caught his eye. "He was welding car bumpers together and making beautiful sculptures out of them," said Hovey
INDIANAPOLIS—In a familiar place at Ben Davis, Adams Central's Lady Jets softball team tried for a second time to bring home a 2A state title but came up short against Indianapolis Scecina in a tight battle, 4-2.
In a virtual home game, the Lady Crusaders entered the contest after defeating the number one-ranked team in 2A, Evansville Mater Dei, by a 1-0 nothing score at the semi-state final.
KOKOMO—About an hour away from their Lady Jet counter-parts battling for a 2A state title in softball, the men from Adams Central were in a struggle of their own to get back to the state title game for the first time since 2001.
The Jets ran into a brick wall named Ryan Keaffaber, however, as the Northfield Norsemen ended Adams Central's fantastic road to the state title game in a 5-1 victory.
