Busy Sunday on tap here

    Sunday is going to be a busy one in Decatur, one like we haven't had since the last time over 1,000 motorcycle riders hit town.
    ABATE (American Bikers Aimed Toward Education) officials said the riders should arrive via US 224 West around noon, then move to the courthouse square.
    At 2 p.m., Bellmont High School will hold graduation exercises for the Class of 2013, Meanwhile, the large monthly flea market will be operating through the morning and early afternoon hours at Riverside Center.

Baker, Braun head Bellmont class for Sunday graduation

    David Baker and Michael Braun will address their classmates Sunday as valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, of the 2013 graduating class at Bellmont High School.
    Graduation ceremonies will begin at 2 p.m. in the high school gymnasium.
    Baker is the  son of Ted and Debbie Baker. Braun is the son of Larry and Jean Braun.

Liechty, Hreha lead SA seniors

    Evan Liechty has been named valedectorian of the South Adams High School graduating class of 2013, and Megan Hreha is the salutatorian.
    Graduation ceremonies will start at 2 p.m. in the gymnasium.
    Liechty, the son of Kent and Teri Liechty, has  grade point average (GPA) of 4.16. Hreha is the daughter of Steve and Susie Hreha and has a 4.11 GPA.

Squaws eye state track title

    In advance of Saturday's IHSAA state finals meet in girls track, pollsters finally did something that had been warranted all year and that was to put the Bellmont Squaws in the top 10 of the state.
    The message to other teams throughout Indiana is clear: that even though schools in northeast Indiana are without question the leader in the state in girls track, anyone who underestimates the ability of the Squaws will have to answer to Alexis Harvey, or Holly Hankenson, or Bailee Hankenson, or Emily Gunsett, or Bailey Beery.

Ossian bank held up by armed trio

    A PNC Bank along State Road 1 in Ossian was held up Wednesday afternoon by three armed men.
    They entered the bank and made their way to the vault, waving pistols.
    The FBI office in Fort Wayne said the men entered the bank at 2:42 p.m.

Voting district changes given final approval

    Adams Court Clerk Gayla Reinhart, assisted by Abigail Dyer, a member of the county election board, last week received approval from the county commissioners to change the line between voting districts 1 and 2 in Decatur, which will move 23 voters from District 1 to District 2.
    Reinhart explained that the last Census had revealed that the change is necessary to keep district populations somewhat evenly balanced.

Proud program on a proud day

    Monday's Memorial Day program, held at the Adams County Veterans Memorial in Berne, was a proud presentation.
    There were about 50 people in attendance, and those people included veterans of all ages, whether participating in the program or not. The colors were presented as American Legion Post 43 Bugler David Rice played the bugle, followed by Britney Hernandez and Sidney Sprunger singing the National Anthem.

Lois J. Franz

    Lois J. Franz, 87, of Decatur, passed away at 4:03 p.m. onSaturday, May 25, 2013, at Woodcrest Nursing Center.
    Lois was born Tuesday, February 9, 1926, in Adams County to the late Simon A. and Frances E. (Emenhiser) Lehrman.
    She married Arthur E. Franz on June 4, 1949, at East Liberty United Methodist Church in rural Monroeville; he passed away on March 29, 1989.

Maxine Grimm

    Maxine (Girard) Grimm, 94, of Decatur, died Monday, May 27, 2013.
    Maxine was born April 5, 1919, in Paulding, Ohio, to the late Adrien J. and Genevieve Girard.
    She was a 1942 graduate of St. Joseph Hospital of Nursing; she retired from nursing after 35 years. Her proudest achievement was in establishing the Berne Nursing Home.
    Among survivors are a son; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a great-grandson (expected in July); and a host of cherished nieces and nephews.

Leo F. Miller

    Leo F. Miller, 90, of Decatur, died Monday, May 27, 2013, at Woodcrest Nursing Center.
    Leo was born on April 27, 1923, in Decatur to the late Casper and Margaret (Omlor) Miller.
    He married Elizabeth M. “Betty” Koors on June 18, 1955; she preceded him in death on February 12, 2012.
