Bone-chilling temperatures were gripping the Decatur area today as wind-chill readings were well below zero and the National Weather Service was predicting a high of only around 10 above.
The Decatur weather station recorded an overnight low of 6 above, which was the 7 a.m. reading.
At the same time, the weather service office in Fort Wayne also had 6 above, with a west wind at 24 mph producing a wind chill of 15 below.
Tony Tate, rural Decatur, retired after more than 41 years with the USDA in December.
Tate started his career as a trainee in Noblesville in 1971, and finished his training in Frankfort in 1972. After graduating from Ball State University, he started full time in 1973 in Shelbyville as a Soil Conservationist.
In 1974, he transferred to Richmond, then to Decatur in 1975 as District Conservationist.
The 2013 Adams County Ag Extravaganza was held at the Mirage on Thursday night. It was a joint annual meeting of the Adams County's Farm Bureau, Pork Producers, and Soil and Water Conservation Department.
After a meal, comedian Jay Hendren entertained the crowd, and then it was down to business.
Eleanor A. "El" Breshock, 87, died peacefully on January 29, 2013, in Munster, Ind., due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease.
She was born March 10, 1925, in Hazelton, Pa., where she graduated as salutatorian from St. Gabriel High School.
El married Joseph Breshock in 1950, and moved to Hammond, then Munster, Ind. He survives.
Carl A. Gromeaux, 93, of Decatur, passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at his residence.
He was born on Tuesday, November 28, 1919, in Allen County to the late Eli and Agnes (Gibson) Gromeaux.
Carl married Dorothy A. Murphy on September 22, 1945; she survives
PORTLAND – Adams Central, Bellmont and South Adams girls’ swimming teams all advanced swimmers – both individual and relays – to Saturday’s sectional finals.
South Adams sophomore Cady Farlow will enter Saturday’s sectional finals with the top time in the 100 breaststroke and third-fastest time in the 100 freestyle. Teammate Kara DeLong had the second-best time in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.
