Enedina S. Rosa

February 6, 2013

    Enedina S. Rosa, 72, of Decatur, passed away at her residence on Tuesday, February 5, 2013.
    She was born in Crystal City, Texas, on May 2, 1940, to the late Tomas and Guadalupe (Serna) Salazar.
    Enedina married Daniel C. Rosa on November 14, 1960; he preceded her in death on June 3, 1974.
    Enedina was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and also attended Cornerstone Church. She was a homemaker.

M. Mercedes Villagomez

    M. Mercedes Villagomez, 100, of Decatur, died at her residence on Tuesday, February 5, 2013.
    Mercedes was born on September 24, 1912, in Salamanca, Guanajuato, Mexico, to the late John and Isabel (Gutierrez) Ortiz.
    On December 25, 1935, she married Anisceto Villagomez; he preceded her in death on May 31, 1986.

City loses plan commission

    The City of Decatur is without a plan commission. But don't fret, one is on the way and no doubt will be in place in a couple of weeks.
    The plan commission was dissolved Tuesday and all seven members tendered their resignations. It was a procedure designed to comply with Indiana law.
    "It's a very complex situation," Mayor John Schultz said at Tuesday night's city council meeting. It is, however, being quickly resolved and a new plan commission will soon be in place, albeit with new faces.

NA board members spread the word

    In its search for a new superintendent, the North Adams Board of Education has been seeking public input on what the public considers to be important factors in the selection process.
    As part of that desire for input, two members of the NA board attended Tuesday night's Decatur City Council to spread the word. Ben Faurote and Stacey Bussel made a 10-minute presentation to council, both underscoring the board's desire for public comment.

St. Joe honors Braun

    St. Joseph Catholic School recently honored Richard Braun of rural Decatur with The Distinguished Graduate Award. 
    Braun, who graduated from Decatur Catholic High in 1947, said in a news release that there are many memories of the years he spent at St. Joseph. One that stands out is The Sisters of St. Agnes and how in grade school it was their dedication to make students good kids. 
    Braun is active in his Catholic faith, it was noted in announcing the award.

Stars triumph over Tigers, 41-37; set to battle ‘Busco

    BLUFFTON—In a game reminiscent to the first times Bluffton and South Adams met, the Lady Stars proved that the first time was not a fluke topping the Lady Tigers in Tuesday night's sectional opening round, 41-37.
    Where 41 points was the mark for AC in a 27-point loss to Luers in game one, South Adams' 41 points was a winning tally in a game that featured plenty of defense and a grand total of 47 turnovers by both teams.

Heritage ends Squaws’ season with second half run, 61-49

    GAS CITY—If you love turnovers, Tuesday night's second game of the class 3A girls basketball sectional at Mississinewa High School between Heritage and Bellmont was right up your alley.
    After leading for most of the first period and several minutes into round two, the Squaws made miscue after miscue allowing the Patriots to stay in the hunt. Bellmont committed a whopping 35 turnovers while Heritage responded in kind with 25 boo-boos in the game that finally fell into the Heritage win column by a 61-49 count.

Jail decision may be forced

    The clock may be ticking towards a deadline for Adams County officials to make a decision about the future of a new county jail.
    During a meeting Saturday morning in Decatur, State Rep. Matt Lehman, R-Berne, said sentencing reform legislation that could return low-level offenders back to individual counties for incarceration is working its way through the Indiana General Assembly.

D’Arcy events to begin Wednesday

    Three days of events in Fort Wayne and South Bend will conclude at noon Friday with a funeral Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 1122 S. Clinton St., in Fort Wayne for Rev. John M. D’Arcy, retired bishop of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, who died Sunday at the age of 80.
    Diocesan officials said the three day will begin in South Bend on Wednesday D’Arcy’s body is transported to St. Matthew’s Cathedral, 1701 Miami St.
