Group looks to mark 100th anniversary of monument

    A committee in charged of organizing a celebration for the 100th anniversary of the Peace Monument on the Adams County Courthouse square met on Wednesday. According to Dave Meyer, head of the county's maintenance department, the monument is the first of its kind in the nation.

Leak from truck cleaned up in city

    City personnel from the police department, fire department and street department were attempting this morning to negate a spill of some type of oil laid down through a wide area by an apparent leak from a truck.
    The truck reportedly coming to the Bunge North America plant on Decatur's northwest side apparently was leaking the substance from a starting point in Delphos, Ohio, and through Decatur.
    One observer described it as a "sticky sort of substance."

Free mammograms offered by hospital for low-income women

    Adams Memorial Hospital has received a grant from the Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust (IBCAT) to provide free mammograms to low-income women in the community.
    Beth A. Knapp,  IBCAT executive director, said the mission of her group is to increase awareness and improve access to breast-cancer screening and diagnosis throughout Indiana. IBCAT grants are 100 percent funded through the purchase of specialty license plates for breast cancer awareness in Indiana.

    Wayne H. Hirschy, 91, of Decatur, passed away on Tuesday, February 5, 2013, at Woodcrest Nursing Center.
    Wayne was born on September 1, 1921, in Adams County to the late Henry C. and Selma (Walchle) Hirschy.
    On December 6, 1941, Wayne married Dortha M. Ray; she preceded him in death on February 19, 2012.

Pearl Whetstone

    Pearl Whetstone, 93, of Decatur, passed away on Tuesday, February 5, 2013, at Woodcrest Nursing Center.
    She was born on January 27, 1920, in Wells County, to the late Orlando O. and Margaret E. (Lamberi) Kizer.
    Pearl married Dale Whetstone on April 8, 1939; he died on May 24, 1996.

Braves’ Neher a late semi-state addition

    Bellmont's contingent for Saturday's Fort Wayne Snider Wrestling Semistate was boosted from three to four this week when Union City's Connor Wyatt pulled out because of injury at 152 pounds, putting the Braves' Logan Neher back in the field. Neher earned alternate status as he wrestled back to fifth place at Jay.
    "We had five guys wrestle back for fifth, and Neher gets to go, so I guess the alternate thing worked out for us," stated Bellmont coach Brent Faurote.

Sharon J. Bookout

    Sharon Joe Bookout, 64, passed away on Friday, February 1, 2013, in Houston, Texas, after a courageous battle with cancer.
    She was born in Decatur to the late Joseph and Grace (Chilcolt) McBride.
    Sharon was an active member of her church. Her faith was the center of her life, and she was treasured by her family and friends.

Bonnie L. Bryan

    Bonnie Lou Bryan, 80, of Decatur, passed away on Tuesday, February 5, 2013, at the Christian Care Retirement Center in Bluffton.
    She was born on October 16, 1932, to the late Edward Lee and Ethel Fay (Davison) Gaunt.
    Bonnie married Edwin Clair Bryan on June 14, 1952; he survives in Decatur.
    She was a member of the Pleasant Dale Church of the Brethren. She was active in the Brethren Disaster Ministries as a Project Director with her husband.
