November 29, 2013

"Our balance is definitely a problem we pose to teams this year," explained SA coach Brett Freeman, now in his second year at the helm of a program on the hottest start ever for the school.

It's Black Friday

November 29, 2013

Black Friday sales had many hits and misses. Crowds at the Decatur Super Walmart store are shown above during their ‘peak’ sales. Many electronic items were distributed via arm bands or tickets, hours before the sale started. Some ads proved too good to be true and stock was very scarce. Playstation 4, iPads, computers, televisions and Amazon Kindles were the first to go, locally. Hot priced items in the toy department, clothing and home goods drew in masses waiting and hoping to save a few bucks.

November 29, 2013

VATICAN CITY (AP) — When he was archbishop of Buenos Aires, Pope Francis was known to sneak out at night and break bread with the homeless, sit with them literally on the street and eat with them, as part of his aim to share the plight of the poor and let them know someone cared.

Thanksgiving at Southeast

November 29, 2013

Students in the first grade class of Trishia Gose helped celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday by learning about Squanto, who helped the Pilgrims celebrate the first Thanksgiving. They also planted corn, starting with a base “soil” comprised of pudding and Oreo cookie crumbs, digging a hole in the “soil” and adding a gummy fish for fertilizer before planting a seed of candy corn. The photos show Avry Lutes, who seemed to enjoy the story of Squanto.

Behind the Black Friday ads

November 27, 2013

The Daily Democrat will publish on Thanksgiving Day, and readers who pick up that day’s newspaper from their doorstep or at their favorite convenience store will be treated to a whopping 1.9-pound edition.
Admittedly it’s normal to weigh your turkey, not your newspaper, on Thanksgiving Day, but Democrat mail room manager Donna Breisch did just that in the days leading up the DDD’s largest edition of the year. She was just curious.

Jailer fired; no reason given, yet

November 27, 2013

The Adams County Commissioners conducted both an executive session Tuesday morning and a special session Tuesday afternoon in Adams County Circuit Court to consider terminating the employment of an individual with the Adams County Sheriff’s Department.

Cook the turkey, and not your house

November 27, 2013

With the Thanksgiving holiday almost upon us, it’s time to take a moment to think about fire safety. According to the National Fire Protection Agency, Thanksgiving day is the number one leading day for home cooking fires. Currently, one of the most common causes of burn injuries and fires is individuals attempting to deep fry a turkey without taking proper precautions.
