New water line will boost pressure in area around Southeast school

    North Adams Community School board heard a request Tuesday night from Nate Rumschlag, city of Decatur Engineer and storm water superintendent, for a utility easement near Southeast Elementary School that is necessary as part of a city water line replacement project in the neighborhood around the property.
    The land in question required for the easement is part of the Southeast School property but is not owned by the school district, Rumschlag said.

Boilers seek end to 7-game skid

     Fumbles and critical plays still curse the Purdue football program as was demonstrated last Saturday at Ross-Ade Stadium.
     Iowa scored the first touchdown in nine plays and 90 yards at 11:15 in the second quarter. Purdue responded in six plays and 35 yards to tie the game 7-7.  Momentum and energy soon began to change when the Hawkeyes, with 1:57 on the clock before halftime, scored a touchdown sending the two teams into the locker rooms with Iowa leading 14-7.

Courthouse project is shelved

    It’s official. The Adams County courthouse and superior court building projects have been put on hold.
    The Adams County Council voted unanimously Tuesday morning to table the projects, with the move precipitated by the recent exploding population numbers at the Adams County jail.

ISTEP+ test scores down at N. Adams

    Proficiency test scores at North Adams Community Schools were down during the most recent round of statewide testing, and administrators are attempting to put in place programs and strategies to address that shortfall.
    The school district’s board of eduction on Tuesday evening heard a presentation from Krista Schloss, program assessment director for the district, who reviewed the latest ISTEP+ scores with the board.

EXTENSIVE DAMAGE

Decatur firefighters responded Tuesday morning to a fire at the duplex home of Daniel McCoy, 1022 Woodridge Drive, and Becky Dickson, 1024 Woodridge Drive. Damage was extensive to both structures. See today's print or online editions for additional details.

NABL to be new youth league name

November 13, 2013

    The new youth baseball league merger combining the former Decatur and Monmouth Baseball Leagues now has a name: the North Adams Baseball League.
    In a meeting at Bellmont Middle School on Tuesday night seven members of a forming committee addressed the public on the constitution of the new league and its future.

   It was another week of upsets in the NFL and college game as noted by the two brackets with a -9 this week. The winners hung tough with the punches suffering only -2 and -3 respectively, however, with the tie-breaking score of 48 points between Denver and San Diego. Tonja Anweiler was the winner with -2 (51), while Harley Hilty was second at -2 (72) and Todd Martinez was third place with -3 (57).

Veterans get a salute from students at BHS

    Bellmont High School honored military veterans Monday as a part of an inaugural  memorial ceremony for Veterans Day.
    Vince Faurote, a student at Bellmont High School, welcomed some 20 local veterans and their families and spoke about the historical importance of Veterans Day and why it is held on Nov.11.

‘When every river turned against us’

    The city of Decatur is featured prominently in a soon-to-be released documentary that focuses on two statewide battles against flooding more than 100 years apart.
    The 30-minute program, "When Every River Turned Against Us — Lessons from the Great 1913 Flood," attempts to show what communities have learned in the wake of the Great Easter Flood a century ago. A five-minute segment of the film focuses on Decatur and the assistance it provided residents in the local flooding disaster of 2003.

White stuff

The first measurable snowfall of the season fell on Adams County Monday evening. City officials recorded 1 inch of the white stuff on the ground this morning.
