SA wins home opener, 54-47

    BERNE— The Lady Starfires started out their 2013-14 basketball campaign Saturday night at home against the Blackford Bruins coming away with an exciting overtime win, 54-47.
    A night after the Berne boys lost the regional title at home, the Lady Stars treated the South Adams faithful with a gem of a contest that saw SA take an 11-5 lead after one quarter.

Trojans stifle Stars’ offense to win regional crown, 28-7

    BERNE— The magic run for the Starfires fell flat on Friday night as Tri-Central came to town and handed the Berne boys a 28-7 loss at home to end their season at the regional championship.
    South Adams (5-8) had been living on the edge for the past two weeks with a win in the sectional semi-final game against county-rival Adams Central 14-13, followed by another thriller on the road at Southwood earning the title with a 40-39 overtime win.

    The primary suspect in a Van Wert, Ohio double shooting has been arrested and is charged with murder, according to a spokesman for the Van Wert Police Department.
    Shortly after 10 a.m. Friday Van Wert Police Lt. Douglas Weigle confirmed Tamara K. Menke, 47, Van Wert, was apprehended after an exhaustive search. Police received a 911 call around 6 p.m. Thursday with reports of a shooting, according to Weigle. Upon arrival police discovered two persons had been shot and Menke, who was identified as the primary suspect, was on the loose.

    Van Wert (Ohio) Police have released a photo of Tamara K. Menke, 47, who is wanted in connection with an overnight shooting that left one dead and another seriously injured.
    Menke is considered armed and dangerous, according to police. Menke is described as a white, 5 feet, 6 inches tall female weighing 150 pounds. She has brown hair and hazel eyes and was last seen wearing camouflage clothing.

Mildred E. Hostetler

    Mildred E. Hostetler, 94, North Canton, Ohio, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, at Montgomery Care Center, Cincinnati, Ohio.
    She was born April 29, 1919, to the late Harley and Catherine (Scheetz) Lower in Coshocton County, Ohio. She married the late Rudie A. Hostetler May 29, 1940; ho died June 19, 1996.

NA board accepts INDOT offer

    The North Adams Community School board on Tuesday discussed at length a right-of-way proposal from the Indiana Department of Transportation as part of the state’s plan to elevate U.S. 224 in the area near Bellmont High School.
    The long-discussed highway reconstruction project would elevate a half-mile stretch of U.S. 224 west of Jackson Street.

‘Interactive’ web page suggested to replace county’s current site

    The official Adams County website is an adequate tool for providing basic information about the area and its various governmental entities, but the site is a veritable dinosaur in the every-evolving world of on-line technology and website development, County Data Processing Director Landon Patterson informed Adams County councilors this week.

    A shooting in Van Wert, Ohio has left one woman dead and a man seriously injured, according to a spokeswoman for the Van Wert Police Department.

AC lands funding for SRO officer salary

    New grant funding has finally come through for Adams Central Schools to help pay the salary of School Resource Officer Charlie Cook for the remainder of the school year.
    Superintendent Dr. Lori Richmond told the school district’s board of education Tuesday the $38,000 matching funds grant will go not only toward Cook’s salary but will also be used for the purchase of additional security measures, such as locks and cameras.

BEST OF SHOW — Coni Mayer of the Adams County Community Foundation was a guest judge at the recent Callithumpian Quilt Show, presented by Creative Quilters quilt guild. Mayer is shown pinning the ribbon on her selection for Best of Show on the quilt named “Black Thread Insanity” made and quilted by Kent Mick, Roanoke.
