Veteran Berne attorney, law director will retire Jan. 1

    Longtime Berne attorney James E. Beitler, Jr. has announced his plans to retire from the offices of Baumgartner and Beitler, Attorneys at Law, effective Jan. 1. 
    Beitler served 30 years as the city attorney for Berne during the mayoral administrations of Gaylord Stuckey, Delmar Neuenschwander, Blaine Fulton and Bill McKean.

‘When every river turned against us’

The documentary film “When Every River Turned Against Us — Lessons from the Great 1913 Flood” will make its broadcast premier tonight on Indianapolis Public Broadcast System station WYFI. The 30-minute film, in which officials and residents from Decatur are prominently featured for their recovery efforts following the 2003 flood in Adams County, will air at 7:30 p.m. The scene above shows mass funerals in Brookville, Ind., which followed the 1913 flooding.

AC volleyball donates to AMH

     The Adams Central girl’s volleyball team recently donated $375 to Adams Memorial Hospital’s Strickler Cancer Institute in honor of breast cancer awareness month. The money was collected at the AC/South Adams game, which was designated as a “Pink Out” game.

    The Decatur Police Department is warning area residents and businesses of a scam involving a person who claims to be a police officer demanding money, claiming an arrest warrant will be issued on individuals who do not cooperate, according to Police Chief Ken Ketzler.

    What do you do when a firefighter comes to your door and says you have to evacuate due to a natural gas leak. You leave, of course, just as probably a couple of hundred or more of us on Master Drive, Mix Avenue and Lewis Drive did Monday night.
    “You can take your pets, too, if you’d like,” the firefighter said.

Plaza purchased by AEP; substation planned

    What has been rumored for several weeks came to light as fact at Tuesday night’s Decatur City Council meeting: American Electric Power has purchased the vast majority of the Decatur Plaza Shopping Center at the north edge of Decatur and will construct a substation to mainly service nearby Bunge North America.

Less ugly by the day

     Crews from Arnold Construction are hard at work this week installing a new brick wall at the intersection of Monroe and 2nd streets. Work started a few weeks ago and brick-laying started last week. The brick work is expected to take approximately four weeks to complete. The Arnold firm also did the work on the recently-completed  Monroe fire station.
 

Bishop Dwenger forces Squaw miscues in win, 63-47

    FORT WAYNE— It took two and a half quarters to break the spirit of the Squaws Tuesday night at Bishop Dwenger.
    The Saints' only three-pointer of the game came with two minutes left to play in the third frame from the hands of Erin Ryan after a Bellmont turnover pushing the once manageable lead to 11 points at 40-29 and Dwenger would eventually cruise to a 63-47 finish.

Ruth A. Fox

    Ruth A. Fox, 93, Berne, died Monday, Nov. 18, 2013, at Swiss Village.
    She was born to Carl and Rachel (Hirschy) Burley Sept. 13, 1920. She married Melving Fox May 29, 1941.
    She is survived by a daughter, Rita Fox of Westfield; a son, Mark Fox of Evansville; and three brothers, Robert Burley of Winona Lake, John Burley of Mt. Vernon, Ohio and Lynford Burley of Berne.
    Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. Friday at Swiss Village Auditorium.

Frieda L. Springer

    Frieda Lou 'LuLu' Springer, 64, Decatur, passed away Monday, Nov. 18, 2013, at Woodcrest Nursing Center.
    She married Robert R. Springer Jan. 23, 1965; he survives. Frieda was a homemaker.
    She is survived by four daughters, Robin Kincaid of Linn Grove, Donna Preston of Decatur, Sandy Smith of Berne and Tamie Cornett of Decatur; a son, Robert R. 'Bobby' (Jennie) Springer II of Decatur; three sisters; 14 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
