Louise P. Lengerich

    Louise P. Lengerich, 91, Monroeville, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013, at Adams Heritage in Monroeville.
    She was born on Sunday, July 23, 1922, in Allen County, the daughter of the late Martin J. and  Lydia M. (Scherer) Boerger. She married Gerald T. “Tex” Lengerich on August 28, 1948; he passed away on March 21, 1995.

Betty L. Pettibone

    Betty L. Pettibone, 92, Woodburn, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013. 
    She is survived by her husband, Gene Pettibone of Woodburn; a daughter, Virginia L. (Tony) Smith of Walton, Ky.; a son, Jeffrey W. (Connie) Chambers of Indianapolis; step-son, Gary L. (Carolyn) Pettibone of Fort Wayne; step-daughter, Donna (Norval) Lehman of Berne; step-son, Michael E. (Carol) Pettibone of Decatur; step-daughter, Angela (Mark) Wiegman of Aurora, Colo.; and sister, Dorothy Blume of Sequim, Wash.

Paul J. Schaff

    Paul J. Schaff, 49, Fort Wayne, passed away at 5:20 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2013, at Lutheran Hospital.
    He was born in Valdosta, Ga., to Donald and Nancy Schaff; they survive. He married Tammy Litmer on May 9, 1998; she survives.
    Paul graduated from East Noble High School, Kendallville, and Purdue University, Fort Wayne. He worked on computer systems for Verizon and then Frontier.

Local residents Walk for Warmth

     Local residents who took part in Thursday evening’s annual Walk for Warmth, sponsored by the Adams County Community and Family Services, did so in the rain and cold.

Auditor gets okay to fill vacancy

    Adams County Auditor Mary Beery this week requested the county commissioners consider breaking the county hiring freeze to allow her to fill an opening created by the resignation of a deputy payroll auditor on her staff. Although the position vacated is a full-time one, Beery stated she has contemplated reducing the position to part-time because of changes in technology which have reduced the workload in some areas of the office’s operation.

South Adams trail group gets boost

    South Adams Trails, Inc. President Gary Habegger recently spoke at Berne’s Rotary meeting regarding updates to the SATI bike and walking trail project.
    Habegger told the Rotarians the trails group recently learned that grant funding through the Indiana Department of Transportation had been approved, adding an additional $185,000 in grant money for continued upgrades to the trail and $415,000 for rehabilitation of the old railway bridge obtained from Bunge North America.
