Martha J. Hilty

    Martha J. Hilty, 91, Berne, died on Monday, Oct. 7, 2013. She was born to the late Jacob and AmandaHersberger Shelter on March 17, 1922 in Homes County, Ohio. She married the late Joseph A. Hilty on Jan. 16, 1947.
    Among survivors are five daughters, Amanda Atlee) Hershberger of Wooster, Ohio, Annie (Johnny) Wickey and Martha (Emanuel) Schwartz both of Berne, Barbara (John) Graber and Elma (Elmer A.) Schwarts of Monroe; three sons, Henry A.M. (Verena) Hilty and Elmer M. (Esther) Hilty, both of Monroe and Daniel M. Hilty of Denver, Colo.

Monroe Lions Club celebrates 60 years

    For 60 years the Monroe Lions Club has been a part of the Adams County community and Monday evening its members, along with members of the Decatur and Union Township Lions, celebrated that fact with a dinner, featuring charter member Paul Zurcher as the speaker.

SWCD office closed until fed offices open

    The shutdown of the federal government has reached out to impact Adams County. Soil and Water Conservation District Director Ryan Noblitt reported to county commissioners at their regular weekly meeting Monday that the office he shares with the United States Department of Agriculture will be closed until all federal government offices reopen.

Minor smoke damage after wood shop fire at BHS

    The Decatur Fire Department was dispatched to Bellmont High School at 3:40 p.m. Monday when a fire alarm was pulled and smoke detectors in the building were triggered.
    The school was evacuated after a drum sander in the wood shop caught fire for unknown reasons, according to a spokesperson for the department. The fire was quickly extinguished, however smoke filled the building making it necessary for firefighters to ventilate the structure before returning to the station at 4:50.

Jets repeat as sectional champions, down Braves 4-1

    KINGSLAND— It took a few rain dates to accomplish but the Adams Central Jets have repeated as sectional tennis champs with a win over the Braves, 4-1.
    The Jets downed Bellmont for the second year in a row in the finals Monday evening at Norwell to earn just their third sectional title in school history after breaking a long spell last season and their first in 1997.
    "Our guys are really playing their best tennis right now," explained AC coach Michael Hower.
