Housing development gets city’s OK

    With two council members absent, the remaining three members of Decatur City Council were busier than usual making motions and seconds and issuing approvals on Tuesday night.
    With Bill Crone and Ken Meyer unable to attend, Charlie Cook, Matt Dyer and Cam Collier gave the okay to several ordinances and one resolution. Ordinances passed on two readings earlier and approved on Tuesday night included:

Craig home: Help may be on the way

    Community assistance is being sought by city officials for a scheduled cleanup day at the home of George Craig and his son, George Jr., at the corner of Jackson and Second streets.
    It was announced at Tuesday night's city council meeting — attended by the elder Craig —that the work event will be held beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday, October 12.
    "Mr. Craig is going to attempt to do something on his property," and the public can help, Mayor John Schultz said.

Berne bank ‘launches’ new facility

    Directors, officers and staff of First Bank of Berne launched balloons on Wednesday to celebrate the beginning of construction of a new banking center at 222 Heritage Trail in Berne. Each balloon contained a note explaining where the balloon lifted off, and anyone who finds a balloon was invited to write or call the bank to let them know how far the balloon traveled.  Joining bank employees were the mayor, city officials and contractors.

Carolyn Poling

    Carolyn Poling, 63, Decatur, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013, at Woodcrest Nursing Center. She was born Nov. 1, 1949, to the late Curtis and Mary (Speakman) Hill in Blackford County.
    Carolyn was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church and the knitting club at the church. She was also a member of the former Eastern Star.

Herbert B. Boukater

    Herbert B. Boukater, 80, Portland, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at Celina Manor in Celina, Ohio.
    Among survivors are his wife, Joyce Brotherton; two sons, Kenny Boukater of Fort Myers, Fla. and Eddie Boukater of Fla.; two daughters, Debbie Oberlies of Fla. and Laura Kelly of Miami, Fla.; two step-sons, Robert Brotherton of Portland and Mark Brotherton of Dunkirk; four step-daughters, Julie Furby of Winchester, Teresa Affolder of Portland, Shelley Heaps of Fort Worth, Texas and Diana Burkhart of Monroe.

Janet L. Dague

    Janet Lloyd Dague, 67, went to be with the Lord on Oct. 2, 2013. She was born in Grant County on Sept. 13, 1946, to Earl and Mary (Cunningham) Lloyd.
    She attended Berne Elementary and high school, graduating in 1964. She married Larry Dague on Sept. 4, 1965, and he survives.

    Harold B. Miller, former Mayor, 83, Decatur, passed away on Oct. 2, 2013, at Woodcrest Retirement Community.

Mildred C. Wendel

October 3, 2013

    Mildred C. Wendel, 84, Decatur, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013, at Lutheran Hospital.
    Among survivors are her son, Don E. Wendel of Decatur; and daughter, Joyce M. (Glenn) Leach of Angola.
    Visitation is from 9 - 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5 at St. Mary's Parish Hall. Mass of Christian Burial will follow, also at the church.
    Burial will be at a later date in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
  

Braves, Jets move on to sectional semis

    KINGSLAND — Both the Bellmont Braves and the defending sectional champion Adams Central Jets advanced on Wednesday night fending off their opponents to advance to the semi-finals.
    The Norwell-hosted sectionals kicked off with the Jets taking a 4-1 win knocking off the Bluffton Tigers, while on the other five courts, Bellmont handled Huntington North by the same score, 4-1.
