Former area players make their mark at Manchester

October 23, 2013

    Two Bellmont High School products are back on the football field this season for Manchester University along with three former Heritage performers also play for the Spartans.
    Wideout Lance Shifferly, a sophomore, has caught 13 passes for 122 yards in six games, averaging 9.4 yards per catch with a longest gain of 18 yards. The Bellmont product also has been credited with two tackles.

Sec. of State to speak on elder fraud

October 23, 2013

Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson will be in Decatur Oct. 30 to speak to the residents of Adams Woodcrest about elder investment fraud. Lawson will speak at 1:30 p.m. in Porter Auditorium.
According to event organizers, Lawson is committed to improving financial literacy and has been providing presentations throughout Indiana through Indiana Investment Watch, an educational program designed to educate seniors on investment fraud and increase financial literacy in Hoosiers.

House decorating contest winner

The home of Dewey and Angie Gillispie, 818 N 3rd St., Decatur, pictured above, has been selected by the Callithumpian Committee as the winner of this year’s House Decorating Contest. Judging was held Monday evening. Placing second was the home of Ken and Chris Sutton, 111 S. 7th St. Third place was awarded to Roger Lee, 813 Bush St., while the fourth-place prize was awarded to the home of Brad McBride and Caroll Burgo, 409 Bellmont Road.

Woodlan shocks Jets in sectional opener

    WOODBURN— The old adage that you can't beat a good team three times in a season was at stake last night at Woodlan High School.
    Superstitions aside, the Warriors were winners of a nail-biting, five-set affair to open up sectional play against the Adams Central Lady Jets 25-18, 23-25, 18-25, 25-18, 14-16.
    The difficulty of beating the Warriors three times in a season was not lost on AC head coach Ashley Beard after the match.

Bradley A. Combs

    Bradley A. Combs, 52, New Haven, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2013 at Hospice Home in Fort Wayne.
    He is survived by his mother, Judith Dowell, Decatur; two sons, Dakota and Hunter Combs, Decatur; a brother, Larry Combs, Janesville, Wis.; and a sister, Kathleen (Kirk) Smith, Decatur.
    No service will be held.
    Memorials may be made to Haggard Sefton and Hirschy Funeral Home for final funeral expenses.

Anselm B. (Jack) Hackman Jr.

    Anselm B. (Jack) Hackman Jr., 85, Decatur, died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013, at Woodcrest Nursing Center. Jack was born Dec. 9, 1927, in Decatur, to the late Anselm B. and Christina (Ulman) Hackman. He married Berniece Agnes Kintz on May 28, 1949.
    Jack was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He retired from Teeple Truck Line in Decatur after 30 years of service. Jack was an avid hunter and card player.

Mary L. Lepper

    Mary L. Lepper,  99, Fort Wayne, passed away at 4 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013, at Lutheran Life Villages in Fort Wayne.
    Mary was born Tuesday, April 7, 1914, in Allen County, to the late Joseph Russel and Nettie F. (Sites) Bergdall. She married the late Theodore H. Lepper on May 10, 1942, in Hoagland; he passed away on Aug. 22, 1996.
    Mary was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church-Soest on Wayne Trace in Fort Wayne, Concordia Seminary Guild and Ladies Aid of the church.

    David N. Schirack, 59, Decatur, died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013, in Saginaw, Mich. He was born Nov. 21, 1953 to the late Cornelius L. "Shorty" and Mary E. (Wolpert) Schirack.
