Elma E. Schwartz

December 17, 2012

    Elma E. Schwartz, 96, of Berne, died Friday at Swiss Village.
    Among survivors are a daughter, Anita (Ronald) Habegger of Fort Wayne and two sons, Rodney (Judy) Schwartz of Rotonda West, Fla., and Neil Schwartz of Warsaw.
    Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday at Swiss Village Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, December 21, at Berne Evangelical Church, with visitation one hour prior to services.
    Burial will be at Evangelical Mennonite Cemetery.

Jonas G. S. Schwartz

    Jonas G. S. Schwartz, of Bryant, was stillborn on Saturday, December 15, 2012, at Adams Memorial Hospital.
    Among survivors are his parents, Pete and Lavina C. (Graber) Schwartz of Bryant.
    The family will have a funeral service at the Pete A.C. Schwartz residence in rural Bryant. Arrangements are by Downing & Glancy Funeral Home.

Taxes, jobs, health care top issues -- Lehman says gay marriage ban may take a back seat

    Taxes, jobs and health care are expected to be among the predominate topics during the upcoming session of the Indiana General Assembly.
    A constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, however, may take a back seat this time around.
    Those were the views expressed by State Rep. Matt Lehman, R-Berne, during a town hall-type meeting held Saturday morning at Adams Central High School. Only a handful of area residents attended the event.

AC okays co-teaching plan

    Adams Central Elementary School is set to try co-teaching with its second grade class taught by Carrie Aschliman beginning with the second semester of the 2012-13 school year.
    Elementary school Principal Terri Laurent told the Adams Central Board of Education Tuesday that after trying for the past few years to adopt a five-year-old girl, Aschliman received a last-minute phone call that everything was finally in order and ready to go.

Three defendants are handed prison terms

    Prison sentences were handed down amid a busy Friday before Judge Frederick A. Schurger.
    Adams County Prosecutor Chris Harvey said Matthew C. Bodle, 30, Decatur, pleaded guilty to attempted rape and will be sentenced on Thursday of this week.
    Meanwhile, Birdine Cole Sr., 47, Bluffton, pleaded guilty to theft and was sentenced to two years in prison.

Adams Central wins three at Yorktown

    YORKTOWN — Adams Central coach Doug Schultz calls his team's performance Saturday at Yorktown "mediocre" as the Jets went 3-2, losing in the battle of No.1s to the hosts, 58-16, then falling to New Haven and former AC coach Barry Humble, 39-27.
    The Jets took second in their pool, slamming Prairie Heights 68-6 and Maconaquah 69-12, and also downing Culver Community 46-25.

Squaws earn 1st NHC win over New Haven, 40-35

    NEW HAVEN—The Bellmont girls basketball team scored nearly five times as many points in the second half Saturday night than it did in the first half and thus earned a 40-35 win over the New Haven Bulldogs in the NHC opener for the Squaws.
    Of course, that offensive production wasn't that difficult considering the Squaws went into the locker room at halftime with just seven points scored on 3-22 shooting (13.6 percent).

Combs' 45 leads Jets to 2OT thriller over Woodlan, 85-78

    MONROE— Friday night's amazing AC win over Woodlan in double overtime at the Hangar could be summed up by just two words...Dalton Combs.
    Leading Adams Central in every sense of the word against the Warriors, Combs scored 45 points (53% of the Jets' scoring) en route to an 85-78 final in favor of the home team.
    Only Landon Adler in his tenure as a Jet has scored more points in a game netting 47 against a Canterbury team in 2004.

Georgianna C. Converset-Bowers

    Georgianna C. (Engle) Converset-Bowers, 95 of Fort Wayne, formerly of Decatur, passed away at 7:10 a.m. on Tuesday, December 11, 2012, at the Coventry Meadow.
    She married Julian W. Converset on December 2, 1942; he passed away on September 7, 1962. She then married Edward J. Bowers on February 10, 1979, in Fort Wayne; he passed away on May 17, 2000.
