    The Daily Democrat its taking its annual look at the year's top stories, as chosen by employees of the newspaper. This year, we've decided to stretch out the usual Top 10 to a Top 12 — or 12 in '12.
    

Braves hold on against short-handed Stars, 45-33

    Daniel Gunsett moved up to 120 to face SA's Matt Nussbaum in the last match of the night with the Braves up just six points.
    "Gunsett usually gets the best of Danny Baker in the room, that's what I told Danny that he gives us the best shot and the kids understand that," BHS coach Brent Faurote noted after the match. "Daniel has been wrestling the best out of those guys, and so I put into his hands tonight so he stepped up and got it done."

Luther Eugene Patrick

    Luther Eugene Patrick, 85, of Fort Wayne, passed away Wednesday, December 19, 2012, after a valiant fight with cancer.
    Born in Social Circle, Ga., Luther was a World War II Navy veteran. He had owned Leipa Car Sales over 20 years and was a co-owner of New Dawn Real Estate Company. He attended Forest Park United Methodist Church. He ran for several political offices, was a past Wayne Township Assessor, former Justice Of The Peace, and an actor for over 40 years.

Phillip J. Schurger

    Phillip J. Schurger, 60, of Decatur, died Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at Adams Memorial Hospital.
    He was born in Decatur on November 1, 1952, to the late Severin H. and Madeline C. (Alig) Schurger.
    Phil was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and of its adult choir. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Msgr. J.J. Seimetz Council 864, where he served as Past Faithful Navigator of the 4th Degree Assembly.

Linda K. Hirschy-Tyner

    Linda K. Hirschy-Tyner, 65, of Elwood, formerly of Decatur, died Wednesday.
    Arrangements pending at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home.

City building buy back on track

    A potential stumbling block that could have possibly nixed the sale of the downtown onetime bank building at Second and Monroe streets to the City of Decatur was removed Wednesday night when the Adams Health Network (AHN) Board of Trustees agreed to drop a stipulation to the sale.

Monroeville school sale given a ‘go’

   FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — A judge has decided that two northeastern Indiana school districts can sell vacant schools without following a state law requiring them to wait four years in case a charter school wanted to claim the building.
    Allen Superior Court Judge Nancy Boyer ruled Tuesday that the 2011 law setting the waiting period didn’t change other laws on how districts can sell property. Boyer also found the waiting period forced districts to bear unnecessary costs for maintaining vacant buildings.

Braves, Stars set for county rivalry, part II

    Senior Shea Pyle, originally thought to be out for the season, recently received clearance to wrestle for the 11-4 South Adams Starfires, who will visit the 12-5 Braves tonight at the Teepee.
    While South Adams coach Eric Myers calls Pyle "questionable" at 160 pounds, the Starfires will be without unbeaten senior standout LJ Moser, normally at 120 or 126 pounds. Moser is serving a suspension but is expected to be back in the lineup for the Starfires' ACAC dual with Southern Wells.

Kathleen A. Brandyberry

    Kathleen A. “Kate” Brandyberry, 83, of Decatur, passed away Monday, December 17, 2012, at Adams Memorial Hospital.
    Kate was born in Decatur on October 12, 1929, to the late Joseph and Hazel (Tumbleson) Kortenber.
    On January 6, 1962, she married Klesson A. Brandyberry; he preceded her in death on February 22, 1996.
