McConnell to exit ACentral

February 15, 2012

    Two letters of resignation were received, and accepted, Tuesday evening by the Adams Central Board of Education.
    High school Principal Sean R. McConnell submitted his letter of resignation after three years of service, effective June 30. Board members accepted, 6-0, with member John Sipe absent .
    The board also approved, 6-0, a letter of resignation from school employee Lisa Black.

AC pounds Southwood at Hangar

    This just in: there's no truth to the rumor that Adams Central's school board has renamed the boys' varsity "The Steamrolling Jets."
    It only seems like that after AC's 14-2 squad ran off with a 70-48 decision on Tuesday over Southwood, the third game in a row won by more than 20 points.

Braves struggle against Northrop

    A fiery display of three-point shooting in the first half by the 17-2 Northrop Bruins had some at the Teepee ready to call the Decatur Fire Department to come extinguish the blaze in an 83-38 Bruin rout of the Bellmont Braves Tuesday night.

Warne Holcombe

    Warne Holcombe, 91, of Decatur, died Monday at Woodcrest Nursing Center.
    Arrangements are pending at Haggard-Sefton and Hirschy Funeral Home.

Elizabeth M. Miller

    Elizabeth M. “Betty” Miller, 80, of Decatur, passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2012, at Woodcrest Nursing Center.     Betty was born on November 5, 1931, in Tipton, Ind., to the late Joseph H. and Elizabeth (Dane) Koors.
    She married Leo F. Miller on June 18, 1955.
    Betty worked as a homemaker and was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. She was also a member of the Catholic Ladies of Columbia and The 3rd Order of St. Francis, Port Charlotte, Fla. Chapter.

Pairings set for state mat finals

    Brooks Faurote, according to the Indianamat.com IHSAA State Wrestling preview, is the field's best chance to stop three-time state champ Jason Tsirtsis from matching the four state title resume of his older brother, Alex.
    And that from a group which doesn't exactly gush about the Bellmont wrestling program, though statistics don't lie, the Braves are, have been, and will be the best in northeast Indiana. Look it up!

Turbine foes make a point

    A group of area residents led by Hilary Shifferly of rural Decatur gave a power point presentation to the Adams County Commissioners Monday regarding the proposal of a wind test tower in Adams County.
    Shifferly presented commissioners with data she has gathered from various agencies regarding what the group feels are adverse affects caused by the operation of wind turbines.

Dangerous Berne eyesore likely to soon bite the dust

    A property on Jefferson Street in Berne which has been deemed both dangerous and an eyesore to the community could disappear within the next 30 days, members of Berne City Council learned at their monthly meeting on Monday.
    The council's emergency adoption last month of an unsafe building ordinance set the stage for official city action at the property site, which reportedly has been the source of numerous citizen complaints.

Rebounding county said fiscally sound

    Adams County Commissioners Chairman Doug Bauman reported during his State of the County address Monday that as the country continues to rebound from the failing economy, Adams County is fiscally sound.
    Bauman noted that as the auditor's office advised, the Adams County Council and Commissioners will need to remain prudent and pro-active regarding spending in the upcoming years in order for the county to remain secure.

Snyder seeks Lehman rep seat

    Mike Snyder of Decatur, a Democrat, has filed as a candidate for the 79th Indiana House of Representatives district. The seat is currently held by Matt Lehman, a Republican from Berne. He has filed for re-election.
    Snyder is president of United Steelworkers Local 15173, representing workers at the Bunge North American plant in Decatur.
