Reinhard awarded Lilly grant

    The Adams County Community Foundation (ACCF) announced that Adams Central senior Shawn Reinhard has been named the recipient of a four-year, full-tuition scholarship as ACCF 2012 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar.
    Reinhard will receive full tuition to the Indiana college of his choice, as well as a $900 yearly stipend for required books and equipment.
    Reinhard, son of Kim and Marvin Reinhard of rural Monroe, will attend Bethel College this fall and plans to major in pre-med.

Armed Forces Day event planned

    Armed Forces Day in Decatur will be marked by a special celebration which will benefit an organization which assists veterans.
    Chris Johnson, owner/operator of the Wet Spot (formerly Donna's Tap) in downtown Decatur, unveiled the plans at this week's city council meeting as she asked permission to close off part of Second St.

    Phylis J. Fisher, 82, Fort Wayne, died Thursday in Florida.
    Funeral arrangements are pending at Haggard-Sefton and Hirschy Funeral Home.

Charlotte E. Vera

April 9, 2012

    Charlotte E. Vera, 101, of Decatur, passed away Friday, April 6, 2012.
    She was born to Walter L. and Lulu (Triplett) Vera on October 1, 1910, in Dunkirk, Indiana. 

Dorothy Elizabeth White

April 9, 2012

    Dorothy Elizabeth White, 97, of Willshire, Ohio, died Saturday in Van Wert County Hospital. 
    Among survivors are her son, Robert White of Decatur, and daughter, Karen (Ronald) Heiser of Decatur. 
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold D. White, and one daughter.
    Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-8 p.m. at Ketcham-Ripley Funeral Home in Rockford, Ohio, and one hour prior to the services there on Wednesday at 10 a.m.

Coaches vs. Cancer Classic results

    Short of adding a fourth team (which every coach mentioned post-game), the Adams County Coaches vs. Cancer Classic was a great event and fit its description perfectly: classic.
    Game one: Adams Central vs. Bellmont
    Every time that AC would put up some runs on the board, coach Ben Fawbush and his Braves would respond with an answer. The final result was a thrilling 10-7 win over the Jets that started off a trio of baseball games that would not disappoint as the day went on.

State foul-up provides windfall

    Adams County and its political subdivisions stand to gain a windfall totaling nearly $750,000 when the state of Indiana divides some $205 million in County Option Income Tax (COIT) and County Economic Development Income Tax (CEDIT) funds that are being belatedly distributed by the state of Indiana.
    State taxation department officials announced on Thursday that, due to an "oversight," recent income tax revenue was never distributed to counties as it should have been, the second such state monetary snafu in recent months.

Big losses seen due to tax caps

    Indiana's property tax caps are going to cost local governmental entities some major capital fund losses during this year's tax collections.
    Figures compiled by Adams County Auditor Bill Borne and presented to the county commissioners this week show a $364,178 loss for Adams County, a $316,769 loss for North Adams Schools, and a $249,713 loss for the City of Decatur.

County, area attorneys honor Biberstein

    The Adams County Bar Association honored one of its own in posthumous fashion on Thursday with a memorial proclamation and ceremony in honor of longtime Berne attorney Bob Biberstein.
    Also on hand in Adams Circuit Court to honor the memory of Biberstein, who died last month, were representatives of the bar associations in Jay and Wells counties.

    Joan T. Heimann, 84, passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2012, at St. Anne Home and Retirement Community in Fort Wayne. 
    Born in Decatur, Joan worked with Southwick Cafeteria for 16 years before retiring in 1991.
