Sculptures unveiling, walk are scheduled for Thursday

    The first annual Decatur Sculpture Walk will kick off in downtown Decatur on  Thursday with an artist's lecture at 2 p.m. at the Adams County Library in Decatur.
    Twelve pieces of new original sculpture art will be on display in the downtown area, organizers said. Four sculptures will be inside local businesses, while 12 will be located along Second St.

Three Kings going down

    Three Kings, once an iconic Hoagland restaurant, apparently is being demolished.
    According to reports, a portion of the building collapsed on Sunday and the building is now being demolished.
    The restaurant has been closed for some two years after having gone through some ownership changes.

Bellmont wins two-part match over Bluffton

    In a match that featured a "to be continued" Bellmont finally defeated the Bluffton Tigers, 3-2 on Monday night at the Teepee after initially starting the match on Thursday night.
    Postponed due to rain, the Braves picked up right where they left off last night with the singles players picking up big wins.

Opal Ruth Brown

    Opal Ruth (Bowen) Brown, 86, a longtime resident of Decatur, passed away August 17, 2012, at St. Vincent’s Hospice Center in Indianapolis. 
    Born on November 15, 1925, to Aaron and Zelma Bowen, she resided in rural Union township most of her adult life.
    Opal married Herman Don Brown on December 14, 1944; he preceded her in death in 2007.

Refinancing to save hospital millions

    Action taken last week by the Adams County Hospital Association by refinancing the lease revenue rental bond used to construct the new hospital back in 2005 will save the hospital several million dollars over the life of the bond issue.

Esta Mae Colwell

    Esta Mae Colwell, 92, of Mendon, Ohio, died Thursday in Mendon.
    Among survivors are her daughter, Glenda High of Mendon; sons, Clayton (Pat) Colwell of Viper, Ky., and Kenneth (Sherrillene) Colwell of Corpus Christi, Texas; and two brothers, including Everett Colwell of Decatur.
    Visitation is 4-8 p.m. on Sunday and noon-1 p.m. on Monday at the New Start Church, Celina, Ohio. Funeral Services are at 1 p.m. on Monday at the church. Burial will follow at Mercer Memory Gardens, Celina.

Parish hall at St. Mary’s is dedicated

    Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades celebrated a Holy Mass, then led a large throng of parishioners to the adjoining St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church's parish hall for the blessing and dedication of the new building on Sunday.
     The hall is the culmination of the St. Mary's Building On Our Heritage capital campaign that began in 2004. 
    That campaign included a new gymnasium.

Amos Liechty Jr.

    Amos Liechty Jr., 73, of Berne, passed away at 4:20 p.m. on Sunday, August 19, 2012, at Swiss Village Nursing Center.
    He was born in Adams County on December 17, 1938, to the late Amos Liechty Sr. and the late Della Nussbaum.
    On May 24, 1957, he married Berverly Fenstermaker; she survives in Berne.
    Amos was a 46-year employee of Berne Furniture, where he drove truck for many years. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Berne.

County jobless dips to 7.6%

    Adams County's unemployment rate dropped slightly in July, falling from 7.9 percent in June to 7.6 percent last month, according to the latest figures released Friday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.
    The county's jobless rate has remained below 8 percent for four consecutive months after starting 2012 at 8.5 percent. Three years ago, in July of 2009, Adams County experienced a jobless rate of 15.2 percent. One year ago that rate was 8.1 percent.

Wayne Brice McMillen

    Wayne Brice McMillen, 89, Van Wert, Ohio, passed away at 4:20 p.m. on Saturday, August 18, 2012, at Van Crest Health Care Center.
    He was born in Adams County on August 28, 1922, to the late Brice and Mary Bemice (Cowan) McMillen.
    On January 3, 1953, he married Arlene A. (Hubert) McMillen; she passed away on January 28, 1996.
