Mental attitude winner

    Adams Central's Alyssa Keller was announced Saturday as the winner of this year's Mental Attitude Award in class 2A softball.
    Along with the honor for Keller, Adams Central received a $1,000 scholarship in Keller's name from Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance.
    Keller ranked fifth in the recent graduating class at Adams Central with a GPA of 11.4 (12.0 scale) and will attend the University of Saint Francis in the fall to study occupational therapy.

China trip begins today

    Northeast Indiana economic development representatives joined Indiana Lt.-Gov. Becky Skillman today on a state-led trade mission to China to market the Northeast Indiana region to businesses looking to expand into the U.S. market.
    Northeast Indiana will be represented by Mayor John Schultz of Decatur; Larry Macklin, Executive Director of the Adams County Economic Development Corporation; and John Sampson, President and CEO of the Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership.

Teacher’s words inspired local author to write

    Monica Koldyke Miller can pinpoint the exact moment when she knew she wanted to become a writer.
    The longtime Decatur resident, whose historical romance novel, "Threads of Betrayal," has just been published, recently recalled a time when she was 11 years old and just entering the sixth grade at a new school.

Irene Halikowski

    Irene Halikowski, 89, of Fort Wayne, formerly of Decatur, passed away on Friday, June 8, 2012, at her daughter’s residence.
    She was born on March 5, 1923, in Poland, to the late Andrew and Zofia Zdrada.
    She married Stanislaw Halikowski; he preceded her in death in March of 1984.
    She immigrated to the United States from Poland in 1951 with her husband and three of their five children. She became an American citizen on October 21, 1994.

Homer L. Inniger

    Homer L. Inniger, 97, of Berne, died Friday in Swiss Village.
    Among survivors are a daughter, Catharine (Max) Haines of Berne, and a son, Pastor Stan (Rebecca) Inniger of Fort Wayne.
    Visitation will be today from 3-8 p.m. in the Swiss Village Chapel. Services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday in the chapel, with visitation one hour prior to services.    Burial will be in MRE Cemetery.

    Omer Sprunger, 73, of Berne, died Sunday at Adams Memorial Hospital.
    Arrangements are pending at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home.

Eagles soar over Jets at state, 3-1

    INDIANAPOLIS—The storybook ending would have been seeing the Adams Central Lady Jets pull off the unlikely and win their first state championship on Saturday afternoon at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis.
    Unfortunately, sometimes the better team wins and AC came up short against South Putnam, a team who went 31-0 to finish off a perfect season and their second straight 2A title with a 3-1 win over the upstart Lady Jets.
    After the contest, the deflated Jets had mixed emotions on their run.

Braves falter late at semi-state

    KOKOMO—Perhaps it was just a foretelling of things to come in the class 3A baseball semi-state game won 11-6 by Western High School over Bellmont at Highland Park Saturday when the start of the game was delayed for several minutes.

    Richard C. Sweeney, 77, of Fort Wayne, died Thursday in Fort Wayne
    He was born in Berne.
    Survivors include a son, Michael Charles Sweeney, Fort Wayne, and a sister, Jean Cabral of Toledo, Ohio.
    Private graveside services will be held Monday at the Westlawn Cemetery in Geneva.
