Lady Jets look to take state title

    Never before in the history of Adams Central High School has a Jet softball team ever won an IHSAA sectional tournament, let alone a regional tournament, and heaven forbid, even think about a semi-state championship.
    This year, however, a group of Adams Central ball players have banded together to play a game they love. That dedication of the game puts them in the IHSAA state finals this Saturday against the South Putnam Eagles, a team that arguably is a strong favorite to win the crown.

Braves have high hopes for state title

    There are four teams left in the 3A state finals for baseball in Indiana and the Bellmont Braves are one of them for the first time since 2002 when Jon Stevens' group of Braves fell to Vincennes Lincoln, 4-0 in the state final.
    Despite the visit to Victory Field in Indianapolis back in 2002, the Braves are still without a semi-state title due to the fact that there was not a semi-state conducted from 2000-03.

Smoke detector drive heats up

    Decatur Assistant Fire Chief Jim Hitchcock says that by the first part of next week, the city fire department will have smoke detectors for use by county residents.
    Anyone who needs a smoke detector may visit the fire station on Seventh St., just off Adams St., or call the department, 724-8909.
    Hitchcock noted, however, that the detectors will not be given to anyone. "Instead, we will take them to the home and install them to be sure they are installed properly," he said.

    Jennifer Kate Hartman, 41, Fishers, Indiana, passed away June 5, 2012.
    She was born July 4, 1970, in Chapel Hill, N.C., the daughter of Michael and the late Diana (Ettleman) Hawfield.    She married Matthew Hartman on September 26, 1992; he survives.
    She graduated from Southside High School in Fort Wayne, and went on to receive her Bachelor's Degree in Telecommunications from Indiana University.

Fun Family Fridays to begin

    Fun Family Fridays will begin this Friday, the Decatur/Adams County Parks and Recreation Department has announced.
    Every Friday will feature something different, something fun, something for everyone, a department spokesman said, adding: "Fun Family Fridays are opportunities for residents of Decatur/Adams County to take advantage of our wonderful outdoor resources."
    Each activity is free and all will be held during a 90-minute period, 5:30 to 7 p.m., each Friday.

Vaughn Edward Merillat

    Vaughn Edward "Ed" Merillat, 96, died Wednesday.    Among survivors are two daughters, Donna (Roy) Heatwole of Harrisonburg, Va.; and Jeannine (Mark) Starks of Centerville, Ohio.
    Funeral services will be at noon Monday in the Swiss Village Chapel, with visitation from 10 a.m. to time of services. Burial will be at MRE Cemetery.
    Arrangements were by Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home.

Shrine parade on tap here Friday

    The local Shrine lodge will host area Shriners as they participate in a parade in Decatur on Friday.
    The parade, due to start at 8 p.m., will feature antique vehicles, tractors, mini-cars, etc.
    The parade will form at and also end at the Krueckeberg building  (formerly Adams Lumber) on Adams St. The parade will go east on Adams St. to Five Points, north on Second St. to Madison St., west on Madison to Seventh St., and south on Seventh back to Adams St.

True E. Myers

June 7, 2012

    True E. Myers, 66, of Monroe, went to meet the Lord on Tuesday, June 5, 2012, at the VA Hospital in Fort Wayne.
    He was born in Decatur on April 27, 1946, to the late Melvin D. and Anna A. (Liechty).
    On April 10, 1966, he married Barbara (Brubaker).
