Honorary co-chairs Lou Koning and Katie Birch, along with Lou's wife, Vicky, got things started Saturday as they walked the ceremonial first lap during the Relay for Life held at Adams Central's football stadium.
Others participating included young cancer survivor Ebony Fawcett, who walked with her mom, Beth Ann, and another young cancer survivor Halle Williams-Seip, who walked with her mother, Ciera Williams, and aunt Sydnie Williams (see accompanying photo).
A lasting memorial to workers of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) is the initial goal of the Friends of Ouabache State Park, according to an announcement.
At a meeting of the Ouabache Friends group held June 19, the organization decided to pursue placement of a statue at the park in Wells County to honor those who helped build the park more than 80 years ago.

Lee H. Wefel, 53, of Monroe, passed away at 1 a.m. on Saturday, June 23, 2012, at Adams Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
He was born on Sunday, August 10, 1958, in Decatur, to the late Donald Wefel and the late Patti (Hamilton) Fuelling. On May 18, 1991, he married Cynthia L. Lovellette in Decatur; she survives in Monroe.
Lee retired in 1998 from Fleetwood Motor Homes in Decatur after 20 years of service.
Doyle M. Winteregg 85, of Berne, passed away Saturday June 23, 2012, at Swiss Village.
He was born in Berne on April 9, 1927, to the late Raymond and Pearl (Yoder) Winteregg.
Doyle married Phyllis A. (Hoffman) Winteregg on October 4, 1946; she survives in Berne.
