Two area festivals have openings scheduled this week.
Hoagland Days kicks off Thursday and Willshire (Ohio) Days will begin Friday. Both are slated for three-day runs.
And in Decatur, the annual Relay for Life gets under way Saturday and continues into Sunday/.
Some summer activities may be taking a hit this year as there now is an open burning ban in Adams County until further notice.
The Adams County Commissioners passed a resolution Monday prohibiting open burning due to severe drought conditions.
Until further notice, the following types of burning are banned throughout the county:
• Campfires and other recreational fires, unless enclosed in a fire ring at least 23 inches across and 10 inches is deep
Zurcher’s Best-One in Monroe will hold its annual Customer Appreciation and American Red Cross Blood Drive event this Friday and Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.
"Celebrating this event each year gives Zurcher’s the opportunity to express our gratitude and thanks to the local community for their continued patronage throughout the year," a news release said.

Bixler Insurance added to their winning ways when they topped Decatur Dental, 8-1 on Friday night.
Mitchel Coates had three hits in the game to pace Bixler's, Isaac Ruble had two hits including a triple, Caden Staub, Andrew Wagner, & Chris Jones each had two hits and Isaiah Wellman added one. Kory Feasel, Carter Siefring, and Sean Hoffman singled for Dental.
Donald E. Light, 84, of Paynesville, Michigan, died Tuesday, June 12, 2012.
He was born in Decatur on March 6, 1928, to the late Grady and Nina (Swartz) Light.
He married Stella Nurkkala on September 15, 1962.
Among survivors are his wife, Stella, of Paynesville; a daughter, Gwen (Jeff) Young of Witchita, Kan.; a brother, Gerald (Winnie) Light of Decatur; and a sister, Irene Agler of Evansville.
He was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters.
Helen M. Thieme, 83, of Decatur, passed away at 1:43 a.m. on Monday, June 18, 2012, at Adams Memorial Hospital.
She was born on Tuesday, June 11, 1929, in Wells County, to the late Orval P. and Edith C. (Bowman) Barger.
Helen married Otto W. A. Thieme on February 11, 1950, in Immanuel Lutheran Church; he survives.
She was an active member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church as a Sunday School teacher and was involved with the Ladies Society.
