Frieda Herderhorst

May 29, 2012

    Frieda Herderhorst, 96, of Decatur, passed away at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 26, 2012, in the Woodcrest Nursing Center. 
    Frieda was a longtime resident of Monroeville and had been a resident of the Woodcrest Garden Apartments since 2009.
    Frieda was born on Monday, August 9, 1915, in Adams County, the daughter of the late Edward and Elise (Franke) Busick. 

William F. Hullinger

    William F. Hullinger, 81, passed away on Wednesday, May 23, 2012, at the VA Medical Center in Fort Wayne.
    Born in Decatur, William worked as a Tool & Die Maker for Zollner Piston 34 years before retiring in 1988. He was in the U.S. Marine Corps, a veteran of the Korean Conflict, and a member of American Legion Post 82, VFW 2457 in New Haven, the Marine Corps League, Devil Dogs, and Korean War Veterans.

Bellmont nips Heritage, 4-3

    —Bellmont played for their playoff lives on Friday night against the Heritage Patriots in the baseball sectional semi-final game held at the Teepee pulling out a 4-3 victory against their foes.
    Bellmont coach Ben Fawbush commented on his tough Heritage opponents, "I don't know what it is about these guys. We come out against Mississinewa and pound the ball and I didn't think this guy (Conner Sheehan) was any better than what we saw the other day and we couldn't hit consistently."

Veterans events slated here, in area

    Veterans-related events in Decatur, Berne and Geneva, along with Willshire, Ohio, have been announced for the Memorial Day weekend.
    The American Legion post 43 color guard and firing squad will be at the Decatur Catholic Cemetery on Monday at 9 a.m. for a short service honoring past and present veterans, before moving to the Decatur Cemetery for another short service.

Hot time ahead for the holiday weekend

    Break out the fans and air conditioners and get the pools ready as Mother Nature has a stretch of hot, humid weather just in time for the Memorial Day weekend for portions of the Midwest and East.
    As cool air with gust winds sweep over the Southwest and snow falls over the high country in the Rockies, building heat over the southern Plains is forecast to surge northeastward later this week, according to AccuWeather.com RealFeel®.

Local Boy Scouts to aid smoke detector campaign

    The Decatur Fire Department, along with the help of area Boy Scouts, will be installing new smoke detectors and batteries in area homes as part of a campaign to provide working detectors for those in need, according to Assistant Fire Chief Jim Hitchcock.        
    Hitchcock said the department is taking donations to purchase the detectors and batteries, and the department is not asking for money from individuals who are in need of a working detector.

Dorothy G. Liechty

May 25, 2012

    Dorothy G. Liechty, 89, of Berne, died Wednesday, May 23, at Adams Memorial Hospital.
    She was born on November 6, 1922, to David O. and Elma (Eicher) Liechty.
    Graveside services will be held Thursday, May 31, at 1 p.m., at MRE Cemetery.
    There are no calling or funeral services.

State’s found funds boost hospital

    The recent discovery of state tax funds found lounging in state coffers instead of being returned to local and county municipalities has been a big factor in the Adams Memorial Hospital's financial picture staying in the black for the year.
    Despite a drop in most categories in April from the previous month, hospital officials reported they have taken in $198,744 more than what they have spent as of the end of April.

Taking names for new security position

    Adams County Sheriff Shane Rekeweg, along with Adams County judges Fredrick A. Schurger and Patrick R. Miller, has announced that the sheriff's department will be accepting applications for the position of court security officer.
    Adams County Council approved the addition of a second security officer last week. John Whitright has handled court security for several years, but is currently responsible for both Adams circuit and superior courts.

City pool opening on tap Saturday

    Due to unseasonably warm temperatures, the city swimming pool will open this Saturday, a week earlier than usual, park and recreation department officials announced.
    Saturday's hours will be 1 to 5 p.m.
    Pool hours for the summer will be as follows:
     Family and lap swim, Monday through Friday, noon to 1 p.m.
     Open swim and lap swim, Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 1-5 p.m.
