    Republicans Deb Stimpson, Mary Beery, Thomas Krueckeberg, and Kim Fruechte were among Tuesday's election winners in Adams County.
    Stimpson won the Recorder nomination, Beery for Auditor, Krueckeberg for Treasurer and Fruechte was nominated for a new term as county commissioner from District 1.
    In the five-person race for three county council nominations, incumbent Dennis Bluhm was the No. 2 vote-getter. Tony Mellencamp ran first and incumbent Randy Colclasure was third.

Last day to 'like' us on Facebook for a chance to win!

    Today is the last day to "like" the Decatur Daily Democrat Facebook page to be entered into a drawing to receive one of three $10 gift certificates to local businesses. Current and new "likes" are eligible to win.
    The gift certificates are to Christner's Pizza King of Decatur, East of Chicago Pizza in Berne or Crossroads Pantry in Geneva.
    Winners will be announced on Facebook and on the Decatur Daily Democrat website.

Hospital expenses see big drop

    A financial statement released by Adams Memorial Hospital Chief Financial Officer Dane Wheeler at a recent meeting of the Adams Health Network Board of Trustees noted that the organization has had nearly $300,000 fewer expenses this year than at a same point in 2011 and thus has a positive balance of $266,428.

Postal Stamp Out Hunger Day is Saturday

    Letter carriers in more than 10,000 cities and towns across America — including Decatur, Berne and Geneva — will deliver much more than mail when they walk and drive along their postal routes this Saturday.
    According to a news release, "They will also collect the goodness and compassion of their postal customers participating in the 20th annual National Food Drive to 'Stamp Out Hunger' — the largest one-day food drive in the nation."

Area man faces charges in Geneva resident's death

    The death of a Geneva man as a result of an alleged fight last November has led Adams County prosecutor Chris Harvey to file charges of aggravated battery and involuntary manslaughter against Nicholas J. Stump, 29, rural Portland.
    According to a probable cause document filed in Adams County Circuit Court last Friday, "Stump did knowingly inflict injury on Dennis L. Sroufe that created a substantial risk of death."

Johnnie Martinez

    Johnnie Martinez, 87, of Huntington, formerly of Decatur, died Sunday in Huntington.
    He was born on January 19, 1925, in San Antonio, Texas,to the late Arthur and Ada (Harrison) Martinez.
    He is survived by two brothers and two sisters, including Bernice Jaurigue of Decatur.
    There will be no visitation or services.
    Arrangements were by Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home.

    Due to incorrect information from the funeral home, the funeral service for Cheryl E. Pietosi was listed as Friday, May 11.
    Services will be held on Wednesday, May 9, at 11 a.m., at Downing & Glancy Funeral Home, Geneva.

Mary K. Schwartz

May 8, 2012

    Mary K. Schwartz, 63, of Sarasota, Florida, died Saturday, May 5, 2012, at the Hospice House in Sarasota.
    She was born August 24, 1948, in Berne, to Dan O. and Martha K. Schwartz.
    Among survivors are her brother and sister-in-law, Levi L. and Ruthie (Mullet) Schwartz; four nephews, Lucas, Marc, Eddie Ray, and ZacharyScwartz; and two nieces, Lily and Abigail Schwartz, all of Nappanee, Ind.
    Visitation, funeral and burial will all be held in Sarasota.

Lady Jets dominate ACAC tourney

    The ACAC girls tennis tournament was held over the weekend at Adams Central with the Jets taking advantage of home-court advantage earning a conference record five first-team selections and a second team placer as well, while going undefeated in the first day earning the ACAC crown.
