SA signs for alternative ed program

    South Adams Schools is one step closer to implementing an alternative education program.
    The schools' board voted unanimously (Tony Mellencamp and Amy Orr were absent) at a special meeting on Tuesday to approve a one-year agreement with the Crossing Educational Center.

Stricken woman opens eyes

    An apparent glimmer of hope has arise in the case of Kaye Mellencamp, the Berne woman felled by a brain aneurysm on Election Day, May 8.
    Fort Wayne Journal Gazette columnist Frank Gray said in an article in Tuesday's edition that the stricken woman opened her eyes on Sunday morning and began following people with her eyes as they moved.
    She tried to speak, but couldn't as a breathing tube was still in place.

Free lunch program gearing up

    The North Adams Community Foodservice has announced plans to participate in the federal Summer Food Service Program.
    Free meals will be made available to all children 18 years of age and under, and to people over 18 who are in a state-apprved educational program for the mentally or physically disabled.
    Locations and dates for food sites are as follows:

    Dorothy G. Liechty, 89, of Berne, died Wednesday morning at Adams Memorial Memorial Hospital.
    Arrangements are pending at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home. 

Robert F. Thomas Sr.

May 23, 2012

    Robert F. Thomas Sr., 94, of Fort Wayne, passed away Saturday, May 19, 2012, at Heritage Park Health Care Center. 
    Born in Antwerp, Ohio, he graduated from North Side High School in 1936, where he enjoyed track and cross country, and still holds the state record in the 1.5-mile race.

Lady Jets top Stars; make sectional finals

    BUTLER— South Adams had hoped that the third time would be the charm on Tuesday night at Eastside as they played the Lady Jets for a third time this season but fell after a fifth inning meltdown, 7-2.
    Perhaps a better phrase for SA would be, "bad things come in threes."
    AC got the best of the Lady Stars in a 5-4 contest early in the season and then during ACAC play, the Jets unloaded in a similar fashion knocking off SA, 7-1 earlier in May.

Squaws send four to state track

    FORT WAYNE—The Bellmont Squaws advanced individuals in four different events to the IHSAA state finals with sparkling efforts Tuesday night at the girls regional track meet at Northrop High School.
    The Squaws finished tenth overall as a team out of approximately 40 teams represented at the regional scoring 29 points, an accomplished that tickled coach Carl Risch pink.
