Jane C. Aspy

       Jane C. Aspy, 77, of Decatur, passed away on Friday, April 20, 2012, at Visiting Nurses and Hospice Home, in Fort Wayne.
    Jane was born on February 20, 1935, in Adams County, to the late Joseph and Florence (Bremerkamp) Laurent.
    On September 6, 1958 she married Ronald D. Aspy.
    Jane was a member of the St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and its Rosary Society. She retired as an administrator of Woodcrest Nursing Home.

Evelyn Corinne Yaney

    Evelyn Corinne Yaney, 105, of North Manchester, Indiana, passed away at 7:40 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at Timbercrest Healthcare Center, in North Manchester. 
    She was born March 3, 1907, in Charleston, Illinois, to the late Harry Samuel and Cora D. (Railing) Miller. 
    On November 16, 1936, she married George W. Yaney; he preceded her in death on December 19, 1993.  

NA is awarded $172,790 grant for its teachers

Lots of applicants for fire department, city police openings

    The Decatur Police Department has 29 applicants for its single opening and the city's fire department has slightly less than 20 for its post. The numbers were passed on to city council at its meeting this week.
    Police Chief Ken Ketzler said aptitude and agility tests are scheduled for the 29 and the field eventually will be winnowed to six candidate to present to the city Board of Works and Safety.

Rescued from doggie death row

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The life of a mutt that’s been on doggy death row for more than a year has been spared by a judge following an outcry from animal lovers and the acceptance of a last-ditch proposal to keep the dog alive.
    Now Prada, the 4-year-old pit bull mix that inspired thousands of strangers across the globe to sign a petition to save the dog’s life, could be headed to Animal Planet fame.

    Arrangements are pending at Haggard-Sefton and Hirschy Funeral Home.

Wanda J. Eyanson

April 20, 2012

    Wanda J. Eyanson, 86, of Decatur, died Wednesday in Adams Memorial Hospital.
    Among survivors are two sons, Tom (Cheryll) Eyanson and Joe Eyanson, both of Decatur; five daughters, including Cheryl Piestosi of Berne; Sue Pickens of Geneva; Angela L. (Daniel) Davis and Rebecca A. (Richard Jr.) Wible, both of Decatur; and two sisters, Marsha Stetler and Shirley Adams, both of Decatur.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Eyanson.

Jets 10-run Southern Wells

    MONROE—The Jets started their conference schedule on the right foot by hosting Southern Wells and earning a convincing 10-0 victory thanks to a one-hit shutout hurled by junior Isaac Luginbill.
    "Isaac pitched a whale of a game!" praised AC coach Dave Neuenschwander.

Dropping dispatchers may save city some $100,000

    The plan to close down the dispatch center at the Decatur police station and have all calls handled through the communications center in the county jail could produce a savings of up to $100,000 for the city, Mayor John Schultz said at Tuesday night's city council meetjng.
    Schultz had initially unveiled the plans at Monday's meeting of the county commissioners, where he found support.

5-year master plan for parks is turned over

    It's been something of a long and arduous effort, but the City of Decatur now has a five-year master plan for its parks system to go along with its new comprehensive plan and redevelopment commission.
    Park board President Larry Isch and Parks and Recreation Department Director Steve Krull turned over the plan to city council on Tuesday night, a thick document which has been over a year in the making.
