Bellmont opened its Northeast Hoosier Conference season in varsity baseball Tuesday night thumbing its nose at experts who said the new bats required for this season in high school baseball would reduce the number of home runs and other extra base hits.
Bellmont battered Columbia City pitching for 13 hits including two first inning home runs and they also had four doubles in the game as they posted an 8-5 win and is now 8-3 on the year.
Cold and windy conditions cut down on the Bellmont girls recording many new season best efforts on Senior Night Tuesday evening and the Squaws fell to the Norwell Knights 85-46 while in the boys meet it was much closer but Norwell still captured a 73-59 triumph at Bob Worthman Stadium.
The Squaws won five of the 16 events on the night and as usual were led by Alexis Harvey and Holly Hankenson. Both girls picked up two individual triumphs and then joined Emily Roman and Allyson Norby on the winning 4 x 400 relay team in 4:15.2.

One building in the Interlaken Apartments complex on the east edge of Berne was heavily damaged by fire early Tuesday afternoon and may be a total loss.
Fire departments from Berne and Geneva fought the blaze, with the Preble FD providing Cascade breathing units.
The complex has 10 buildings in all and 35 units, covering 6.44 acres.

Lester W. Mitchel, 93 of Roanoke passed away early Saturday morning, April 21, 2012 at the Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Mr. Mitchel worked at City Light & Power in Decatur and then retired from Indiana/Michigan Power Co. in 1983 after 49 years.
In Friday's edition, the names of two surviving sons, and one deceased daughter, were inadvertently omitted from the obituary of Wanda J. Eyanson.
Not listed were Edward A. Eyanson of Columbus, Ga.; James R. Eyanson of Celina, Ohio; and Janet Rhodes.
Disaster of the training variety struck Decatur on Monday night as various local emergency services participated in a table-top exercise.
The mock disaster involved a huge tornado which tore through Decatur and caused widespread damage, including striking Bellmont High School.
Fifteen to 20 people were involved in the three-hour exercise conducted at the Decatur fire station on Seventh St., starting around 5:30 p.m.
With two of its five members absent, Berne City Council conducted only a portion of its planned business Monday evening, while postponing other actions until the full body is present.
Two planned public hearings went ahead as scheduled, including a session to accept comment on a proposal to establish an Economic Revitalization Area at EP Graphics as part of a 10-year tax abatement request.
Funeral services are pending at Elzy-Patterson-Rodak Funeral Home in Ossian for Zachary Wendell McKee, a 27-year-old Ossian resident who died Sunday in an unusual accident.
According to reports, McKee fell onto the electrified third rail at a CTA Purple Line station in the Chicago suburb of Evanston on Sunday. The death has been ruled an accident.

MONROE— The wind was not the craziest part of AC's baseball contest hosting Jay County as the game also featured two hit batsmen that were not awarded first base because the official did not see the contact, three ground-rule doubles that slipped through the fence at almost the exact same spot, an offensive struggle that saw 20 base-runners stranded by both teams, and a three-run seventh inning for AC to come from behind and defeat the Patriots, 4-3 at the Hangar on Monday night.
