Academic All-State Honorable Mention for two Squaws

    Bellmont seniors Allison Gutierrez and Mikala Quinn were selected to the Academic All-State Honorable Mention list at the girls’ basketball banquet last week. The girls were selected for their outstanding play on the court and success in the classroom as well.

Harvey Adams County's only placer at indoor state

    MARION—Bellmont's Alexis Harvey finished in the medal round of the 55 meter dash Saturday at the  Hoosier State Relays held at Indiana Wesleyan University's Troyer Fieldhouse to be the only participant from Adams County to score.
    Harvey posted a 7.51 speed in the finals for seventh place (the top eight advance to the final round) out of 29 runners who had qualified for the indoor state finals event.

Zeller hoops dynasty fires up hometown

    WASHINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Simply put, Washington, Ind.’s affection for all things Zeller knows no bounds.
    The three Mr. Basketball, McDonald All-American brothers helped deliver four state titles to town  — and people may be even more excited about the Zeller dynasty today than when Luke Zeller’s miracle shot first brought the name to national attention in 2005.

    Lehigh and Norfolk State really messed things up for the many sparkling clean brackets out there. Luckily for those who did not pick the 15 over two upsets, neither did anybody else.

Barn destroyed in fire

The Decatur Fire Department was dispatched at 6:42 p.m. Sunday to the home of Leo Thieme, 6950 E 700 N, in response to a barn fire.
    According to a spokesman for the department, the barn was a total loss. There were no injuries.
    Firefighters remained on scene until 12:30 a.m. Monday.
    No estimate of monetary damage was given.
    Crews were dispatched again at 4:01 a.m. this morning to Fleetwood Motor Homes, 1031 E Hwy 224, in response to what turned out to be a false alarm.

Just buzzing through

    Could the turkey buzzards (or turkey vulture, if you prefer) perched all over a large tree at the corner of Winchester and Schirmeyer streets in Decatur last week been on their way to Hinckley, Ohio?
    No matter. Such a congregation of these creatures inside city limits is an unusual sight.
    Every year on March 15 the city of Hinckley has eagerly awaited the return of the buzzards at "Buzzards' Roost" at the Hinckley Reservation, part of the Cleveland Metroparks.

Allison M. Curtis

    Allison M. Curtis, 23, of Geneva, died Friday in Adams Memorial Hospital.  
    She was the daughter of Thurman Curtis of Wells County and Ann (Robert) Bergman, of Geneva.
    Among survivors are her mother and stepfather,  Ann and Robert Bergman of Geneva; father Thurman Curtis of Wells County; grandfather Tom Hough of Geneva; grandmother Joyce Hough of Geneva; and sisters Kati Curtis of Geneva,  Monica Curtis of Berne, and Shyler Bergman of Berne.

Herman W. Hammond

     Herman W. Hammond, 87, a lifelong resident of Decatur, died at 5:56 p.m. Thursday in Adams Memorial Hospital.    
    Herman was very active in the Decatur Church of God, serving in various positions. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 43 of Adams County.
      Herman worked with his brothers in Hammond Produce for many years and was the Washington Township Assessor for 12 years.
