TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Indiana’s recently ousted state school superintendent is Florida’s new education commissioner.
The State Board of Education selected Tony Bennett, a Republican who lost a bid for re-election in Indiana last month, on Wednesday in Tampa.
The board picked Bennett from a slate of three finalists.
Thomas William Adler, 96, of Decatur, passed away on Sunday, December 9, 2012, at Adams Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Adams County on November 21, 1916, to the late Carl and Theresa (Baltzell) Adler.
On May 3, 1941, he married Dorothy H. (Howard) Adler; she preceded him in death on July 2, 2009.
Georgianna C. (Engle) Converset - Bowers, 95, of Fort Wayne, died Tuesday morning.
Arrangements are pending at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home.
Marilyn A. Kirchner, 62, of Decatur, died on Monday, December 10, 2012, at her daughter’s residence.
She was born in Decatur on August 8, 1950, to the late John and Lucille (Lengerich) Brite.
Marilyn was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and the Women of St. Mary. She was also a member of the Women of the Moose Lodge 1311 and Eagles Lodge. She was a nurse at Village of Heritage and Comfort Keepers.
Veteran North Adams educator and current Superintendent of Schools Dr. Wylie Sirk has announced his retirement, effective July 1.
Sirk, who this summer will have completed 36 years in the education field — 19 of them at North Adams Community Schools — submitted his letter of resignation to the North Adams school board Tuesday evening.
"I've been prayerfully considering this for the last six months, and the time is right to end this portion of my career," the superintendent said.
After a decade at Adams Central Community Schools, Superintendent Mike Pettibone announced Tuesday night that he will retire at the end of the 2012-13 school year.
Pettibone submitted his letter of retirement to a less than full Board of Education Tuesday evening, with members Steve Bailey and John Fox absent, and Brian Tonner leaving early to attend another meeting.
Bailey announced through a letter of resignation that he is leaving the board.
Retired businessman Ray Gill and and Adams County technology coordinator Landon Patterson were selected Tuesday evening from among four applicants to fill two vacancies on the South Adams school board.
Applicants seeking appointment to two vacant District 3 seats on the board included Gill, Patterson, Wesley Haight and Rachael Rosswurm.
The new board members will serve the remaining two years of the unexpired terms of the vacant board seats, from January of 2013 through December of 2014.

The Bellmont girls basketball team rallied from a seven-point deficit early in the fourth period by scoring five points in a span of seven seconds and the Squaws knocked off the Blackhawk Christian Braves by a final 59-56 count in non-conference action to pick up their second win of the season.
